Schalke v Galatasaray facts

There was nothing between Schalke and Galatasaray when they met on matchday three and both sides will be eager to step up their Group D challenge in Gelsenkirchen.

• The goalless draw in Istanbul left Schalke on five points, one ahead of their Turkish opponents and two behind section leaders Porto. Lokomotiv have lost all three matches so far and would be eliminated if they suffer a fourth defeat and there is a winner at the Arena AufSchalke; if Loko draw at Porto and Schalke win, the Russian club would also be unable to reach the round of 16.

Previous meetings
• Galatasaray came out on top when the teams met in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League round of 16. A 1-1 draw in Istanbul left the tie in the balance, but the Turkish side – coached then, as now, by Fatih Terim – progressed to the last eight thanks to a 3-2 success in Gelsenkirchen, Umut Bulut scoring the winner deep into added time. Galatasaray went on to lose to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.

• Selçuk İnan set up three of Galatasaray's four goals in that tie, including the one in the home first leg, while Fernando Muslera also played in both legs.

Schalke
• Held 1-1 at home by Porto in their first Group D fixture, the German club snatched a 1-0 win at Lokomotiv Moskva on matchday two with a late Weston McKennie goal.

• Schalke have won only one of their last six UEFA Champions League games in Gelsenkirchen (D2 L3), conceding 18 goals in that run.

• Schalke are, however, unbeaten in seven home European fixtures (W4 D3).

• Cimbom have therefore lost their last five European away matches, and ten of the last 12 (D2). Their last European victory outside Turkey was that 3-2 success at Schalke in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League round of 16; they are without a victory in 14 matches (D2 L12).

• Galatasaray have, however, won four of their last seven away games against German clubs (D1 L2) – although the most recent contest ended in a 4-1 loss at Dortmund in the 2014/15 group stage.

• Turkish champions in 2017/18, Galatasaray last reached the UEFA Champions League round of 16 in 2013/14.

• Galatasaray are in the group stage for the 15th time – the same number as all other Turkish teams combined.

• The Istanbul club's 2017/18 European campaign lasted only one tie – they lost 3-1 on aggregate to Swedish club Östersund in the UEFA Europa League second qualifying round.

• Schalke were without a win in four matches, drawing three in a row – although they did win on penalties against 2. Bundesliga side Köln in the DFB Pokal on 31 October – before Saturday's 3-1 home defeat of Hannover.

• That was only Schalke's second home win this season in their sixth fixture (D1 L3). They have scored in only three of those fixtures – a total of five goals.

• Nabil Bentaleb has scored in Schalke's last two games while against Hannover Breel Embolo found the net for the first time since 18 September and Mark Uth got his first goal of the season.

• Bentaleb scored an 89th-minute penalty equaliser in the cup game at Köln, Schalke's first goal in four matches after a run of 396 minutes without finding the net.
