Shakhtar Donetsk v Manchester City background

Shakhtar Donetsk will be looking for a repeat of last season's result as they again welcome a Manchester City side whose Group F campaign belatedly kicked into gear on matchday two.

• The Ukrainian champions have drawn their first two games and are third in the section, one place and one point behind City, who got off the mark with a late winner last time out.

Previous meetings
• The teams were paired together for the first time in the 2017/18 group stage, when home sides held the upper hand.

• City were 2-0 winners in Manchester on matchday two, Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling scoring at the start and end of the second half to secure the points.

• Josep Guardiola's side travelled to Ukraine for their final fixture with a place in the round of 16 already assured, but looking to make it six wins out of six in the section. Instead Shakhtar secured their own place in the knockout stages with a 2-1 victory, goals from Bernard and Ismaily proving enough despite Sergio Agüero's added-time penalty.

• The Ukrainian club's first two games both finished 2-2, Shakhtar twice coming from behind to draw with Hoffenheim on matchday one – the latter's UEFA Champions League debut – before letting slip a two-goal lead at Lyon.

• Having opened with an unexpected 2-1 loss at home to Lyon, City won by the same scoreline at Hoffenheim in their second fixture, David Silva scoring the winning goal in the 87th minute.

• Josep Guardiola's side finished 19 points clear in the English Premier League last season, picking up a record 100 points – although there was frustration as their European campaign ended against familiar opponents, domestic rivals Liverpool running out 5-1 aggregate winners in the quarter-final.

• City have won two of their last four European away games, losing the other two.

• The Manchester club picked up six points away from home in last season's group stage, winning at Feyenoord (4-0) and Napoli (4-2) before being beaten at Shakhtar.

• City have won only two of their last seven European matches, home and away – losing the other five.

• The Citizens' best UEFA Champions League performance was reaching the 2015/16 semi-finals; this is their eighth consecutive appearance in the group stage.

• City's record in Ukraine is W1 L2, the victory a 3-1 success at Dynamo Kyiv in the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League round of 16.

• Shakhtar's record European defeat was a 7-0 loss at Guardiola's Bayern München in the 2014/15 round of 16. The Pitmen lost four of their five fixtures against Barcelona when Guardiola was in charge, including the 2009 UEFA Super Cup (0-1).

• Fernandinho was a Shakhtar player between 2005 and 2013 when he left for City, scoring 31 goals in 183 league outings. He was named Ukraine's Premier League player of the year in 2007/08, and amassed six league titles, four Ukrainian Cups and the 2008/09 UEFA Cup.

• That and the 1-0 loss against the same opponents in Kyiv on 3 August are the only domestic games Shakhtar have lost this season.

• City were 5-0 winners at home to Burnley on Saturday, their second win by that scoreline in their last four Premier League matches, and their fifth successive clean sheet in the league. The English champions have conceded only three goals in their first nine Premier League games this season.

• The matchday one loss at home to Lyon is City's only defeat in their last 19 matches in all competitions (W15 D3), since a 2-1 loss at home to Liverpool in last season's UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg.

• City ensured they would be top of the Premier League on goal difference heading into the international break with a 0-0 draw at Liverpool on 7 October, although they might have had all three points had Riyad Mahrez not missed a late penalty.
