PSV v Internazionale facts

PSV Eindhoven are looking to bounce back from a heavy opening defeat as Internazionale Milano visit the Netherlands buoyed by their own positive start to the new UEFA Champions League season.

• While the Dutch champions were succumbing 4-0 at Barcelona in their first Group B fixture, their joint heaviest away defeat in the competition, late goals from UEFA Champions League debutants Mauro Icardi and Matías Vecino enabled Inter to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 victory at home to Tottenham.

Previous meetings
• Inter were victorious in the clubs' only past fixtures, in the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League group stage. Two Zlatan Ibrahimović goals secured a 2-0 victory at San Siro, before Julio Cruz's effort gave Inter the points in the Netherlands.

• The Eindhoven club claimed their 24th Dutch league title in 2017/18 – the third time in four seasons they have lifted the Eredivisie crown.

• This is PSV's 16th season in the group stage – more than any other Dutch side. They qualified by beating Belarusian champions BATE Borisov 6-2 on aggregate in the play-offs (3-2 away, 3-0 home).

• The Eindhoven club failed to win a game in their last group appearance, in 2016/17 (D2 L4), and have not won in their last nine UEFA Champions League fixtures, group stage to final (D4 L5).

• PSV's last home win in the competition proper was a 2-1 defeat of CSKA Moskva in December 2015. They won all three home games in that 2015/16 group stage; their record since then is D2 L2 with just one goal scored.

• PSV's 2017/18 European campaign lasted only one tie – they lost 1-0 home and away to Croatian club Osijek in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

•  European Cup winners in 1988, PSV have reached the UEFA Champions League knockout stage only four times – most recently in 2015/16, when they got to the last 16.

• PSV are unbeaten in their last three games at home to Serie A sides (W1 D2), and boast the record W7 D2 L3 in home games with Italian clubs overall.

• Fourth in Serie A in 2017/18, Inter are the last Italian team to win the UEFA Champions League, in 2010 – their third European Cup triumph, and first in 45 years.

• This is the 12th time Inter have been in the group stage – but the first since 2011/12.

• Inter have progressed from their group in their last eight UEFA Champions League campaigns.

• Inter did not take part in UEFA competition in 2017/18; their most recent European campaign came the previous season, when they failed to progress from their UEFA Europa League group.

• The Nerazzurri last visited the Netherlands for a 2-2 draw at Twente in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage, extending their unbeaten run away to Eredivisie clubs to six matches (W2 D4).

• Home and away, Inter are unbeaten in nine matches against Dutch sides (W6 D3), since a 1-0 home loss against Feyenoord in the 2001/02 UEFA Cup semi-final first leg (2-3 aggregate).

• PSV's Trent Sainsbury spent the second half of 2016/17 on loan at Inter, making one appearance to become the first Australian ever to play for the club.

• Inter's Dutch international Stefan de Vrij scored seven goals in 135 Eredivisie matches for Feyenoord between 2009 and 2014.

• On 4 August PSV lost on penalties to Feyenoord in the Johan Cruijff Schaal after a goalless 90 minutes at their own ground in Eindhoven.

• PSV have won ten of their 11 games in all competitions since then, the exception the matchday one loss at Barcelona, including all seven in the Eredivisie. They were 2-0 winners at NAC Breda on Saturday and have kept clean sheets in their last three Eredivisie matches, scoring 22 goals in their five most recent domestic outings.

• Luuk de Jong has scored in PSV's last three Eredivisie matches. Donyell Malen also found the net against NAC, his first Eredivisie goal.

• PSV have won their first five Eredivisie games for the sixth time; they won the title in each of the previous five campaigns.

• The 7-0 defeat of Den Haag on 15 September was PSV's biggest win since 2 February 2013 – another success against Den Haag by the same scoreline.
