FC Bayern München are closing in on another UEFA Champions League semi-final appearance as they welcome Sevilla FC for the second leg of their last-eight tie.

A Jesús Navas own goal and Thiago Alcántara's deflected header sealed a comeback win in the first leg on 3 April after Pablo Sarabia had given Sevilla a first-half lead. That was the first time Sevilla had lost at home to German visitors, in their 12th fixture, and ended Bayern's run of five successive losses in Spain.

• This is Bayern's seventh consecutive quarter-final and 29th overall – only Real Madrid CF, in this round for the 35th time, have featured more often. In contrast, Sevilla are in the last eight of the European Cup for the first time since their only previous appearance at this stage 60 years ago.

• This is Bayern's first tie against Sevilla although they have been eliminated by Spanish opponents in the last four seasons. The Munich club boast a strong record at home to Liga sides, although Sevilla have enjoyed plenty of success in Germany.

• Bayern are appearing in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals for the 17th time, more than any other club. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid are next in line on 16 apiece.

• Bayern's record in two-legged ties against Spanish sides is W9 L10. Their interest in last season's competition was ended at this stage by Real Madrid, who won 2-1 in Munich and 4-2 after extra time in Spain – Bayern's fourth successive knockout loss in ties against Liga teams. They were beaten by Club Atlético de Madrid in 2015/16, FC Barcelona in 2014/15 and Real Madrid again in 2013/14 – all in the semi-finals.

• Jupp Heynckes' side reached this stage with an 8-1 aggregate win against Beşiktaş JK in the round of 16, including a 5-0 win in Munich that was the biggest home first-leg victory in the UEFA Champions League knockout phase.

• Before beating Beşiktaş, the Munich club had won all three home games in Group B: 3-0 at home to both RSC Anderlecht and Celtic FC before a 3-1 defeat of section winners Paris Saint-Germain on matchday six.

• Bayern won all 16 of their UEFA Champions League home matches between 17 September 2014 and 15 February 2017, a competition record. The 2-1 loss to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals was their first reverse in Munich since a 4-0 defeat by the same opponents in their 2013/14 semi-final second leg.

Ribéry: Bayern not through yet

Sevilla
• Sevilla's only previous European Cup quarter-final came in their debut European season, 1957/58, when they lost 10-2 on aggregate to Real Madrid CF (0-8 away, 2-2 home).

• That 8-0 first-leg defeat by Madrid is Sevilla's heaviest European loss, and the biggest margin in any European Cup quarter-final match.

• The Spanish side's record in two-legged knockout ties against German opposition is W3 L2. Their most recent encounter was a 4-2 aggregate win against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the round of 32 in Sevilla's victorious 2014/15 UEFA Europa League campaign (1-0 home, 3-2 away).

• Sevilla's last visit to Germany brought a 4-2 loss at Mönchengladbach in the UEFA Champions League group stage in November 2015 – ending a run of five straight victories against Bundesliga opponents, two of which came in away matches.

• They have a strong overall record in Germany with five wins from nine visits (three defeats, one draw).

• Vincenzo Montella's side reached this stage with a 2-1 aggregate win against Manchester United FC, Wissam Ben Yedder coming off the bench to score twice in the second leg at Old Trafford.

• That was Sevilla's first away win in this season's competition since the play-offs, and a first victory in the UEFA Champions League proper outside Spain in six matches (D3 L2). The Andalusian club did not win away in Group E, and endured their heaviest UEFA Champions League defeat in losing 5-1 at FC Spartak Moskva on matchday three. They concluded with a 1-1 draw at NK Maribor to secure second place in the section.

• Sevilla have lost only two of their last 12 away matches in UEFA competition (W4 D6): at Spartak and the 2-0 reverse at Leicester City FC in last season's round of 16 second leg, which completed a 3-2 aggregate loss.

• Sevilla have lost the home first leg twice previously in UEFA competition, winning one of those ties on aggregate and losing the other, even though they won both second legs. They were eliminated by FC Porto in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 32, losing 2-1 at home and going out despite a 1-0 second-leg away win; three years later, in the last 16 of the same competition, they beat city rivals Real Betis Balompié 4-3 on penalties after each side had won 2-0 away.

• Sevilla's penalty shoot-out record in UEFA competition is W5 L1:
5-4 v Athletic Club, 2015/16 UEFA Europa League quarter-finals
4-2 v SL Benfica, 2013/14 UEFA Europa League final
4-3 v Real Betis Balompié, 2013/14 UEFA Europa League round of 16
2-3 v Fenerbahçe SK, 2007/08 UEFA Champions League round of 16
3-1 v RCD Espanyol, 2006/07 UEFA Cup final
4-3 v PAOK FC, 1990/91 UEFA Cup first round
