Bayern finish off Beşiktaş to reach quarter-finals

Bayern finished the job they started against Beşiktaş three weeks ago to book their place in the quarter-finals.

Protecting a 5-0 lead, Jupp Heynckes' team dispelled any lingering doubts about their progress when Thomas Müller picked out Thiago Alcântara to finish from close range. Things went from bad to worse for Beşiktaş when Gökhan Gönül turned into his own net early in the second half, but the hosts found some consolation when Vágner Love capitalised on David Alaba's misplaced pass to pull one back.

Substitute Sandro Wagner restored Bayern's cushion when he chested in Alaba's deflected cross late on to register his first ever goal in the UEFA Champions League proper.

In a game with few standout performers, it was Müller's perfect cross in the 18th minute that unlocked the Beşiktaş defence and allowed Thiago to tap in the away goal that all but guaranteed Bayern's progress. This role on the right may not be Müller's preferred position, but he does the job selflessly and has once again become indispensable.

Cetin Cem Yilmaz, Beşiktaş: This tie had, in reality, been decided in Germany. That did not stop this game being a fine encounter, though, with both sides keen to attack whenever possible. Beşiktaş would have liked to keep their unbeaten record intact, but they simply could not live with Bayern. However, this results does not detract from a great campaign which will be remembered more for its highs than its lows.

Jordan Maciel, Bayern: Heynckes showed Beşiktaş and the occasion massive respect by sending out a full-strength team, and ultimately they got the job done. However, the German champions presented the hosts with a goal, which won't please their coach. Yes, they had inflicted the real damage before tonight, but they need to be better in the latter stages and not allow complacency to creep into their game. Credit to Beşiktaş for not buckling after conceding a poor second goal early in the second half.
