There will be five teams from the same country in a UEFA Champions League knockout phase for the first time.

The Premier League accounts for the round of 16 quintet, with Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur all through. In fact, Liverpool, City, United and Spurs all progressed as group winners, only the second time that four compatriot clubs have topped their sections. The first occurrence was in 2006/07 when Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United achieved the feat.

Season 2015/16 was the first time that five sides from the same nation had even contested the group stage: Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atlético advanced to the last 16 but Liga rivals Sevilla and Valencia failed to join them.
