Cristiano Ronaldo's penalty for Real Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday leaves him and Harry Kane tied on five goals at the top of the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League scoring charts.

2017/18 group stage top scorers
5: Harry Kane (Tottenham), Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
4: Wissam Ben Yedder (Sevilla), Edinson Cavani (Paris)
3: Vincent Aboubakar (Porto), Edin Džeko (Roma), Roberto Firmino (Liverpool), Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United), Lionel Messi (Barcelona), Neymar (Paris), Dimitri Oberlin (Basel), Mohamed Salah (Liverpool), Cenk Tosun (Beşiktaş)

At the halfway point, Kane and Ronaldo are nearly on course to match the record tally for a single group stage. That mark was set by the Portugal forward two seasons ago.

Most goals in a single group stage
11: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, 2015/16)
10: Lionel Messi (Barcelona, 2016/17)
9: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, 2013/14), Luiz Adriano (Shakhtar Donetsk, 2014/15)
8: Filippo Inzaghi (Milan, 2002/03), Hernán Crespo (Inter, 2002/03), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United, 2004/05)

Only once in the past ten seasons has any name other than Ronaldo or Messi appeared at the top of the UEFA Champions League scoring charts; even then, in 2014/15, Neymar finished tied with both players on ten goals. Can Kane – or indeed anyone else – end that run this term?
