Bayern bid for better as Celtic come to Munich

FC Bayern München are looking to regroup after a notable setback in their second Group B fixture, and will aim to get back on track against a Celtic FC side buoyed by a rare away victory last time out.

• Bayern were beaten 3-0 at Paris Saint-Germain on matchday two, a defeat that prompted the departure of coach Carlo Ancelotti the following day. Celtic, meanwhile, won by the same scoreline at RSC Anderlecht last time out, their biggest away win in the UEFA Champions League. 

Previous meetings
• The sides' only past fixtures came in the 2003/04 group stage, when Bayern picked up four points from their two games against Celtic.

• Bayern, then coached by Ottmar Hitzfeld, came from behind to win 2-1 in Munich on matchday one, Roy Makaay scoring two late goals (73, 86) after Alan Thompson had given Martin O'Neill's Celtic a 57th-minute lead.

• This is Bayern's first game against a Scottish club since a 5-1 win at home to Aberdeen FC in the 2007/08 UEFA Cup round of 32 second leg (7-3 aggregate).

• Bayern have won their last four matches against Scottish visitors in Munich, and are unbeaten at home against clubs from Scotland (W5 D3).

• Bayern qualified for the group stage after winning their fifth straight Bundesliga title in 2016/17. The German side are aiming to reach the knockout rounds for the tenth season in a row.

• The Munich club, 3-0 victors at home to Anderlecht in their first Group B game, won all 16 of their European home matches between 17 September 2014 and 15 February this year, a competition record; the 2-1 loss to Real Madrid CF in the quarter-finals was their first reverse in Munich since a 4-0 defeat by the same opponents in their 2013/14 semi-final second leg.

• Under Ancelotti, Bayern came second in their group behind Club Atlético de Madrid in 2016/17 – the first time they had failed to win their section since 2009/10. They beat Arsenal FC 10-2 on aggregate in the round of 16, only to lose 6-3 over two legs to Madrid.

• Bayern have won all ten group home games since a 3-2 reverse at the hands of Manchester City FC on matchday six in 2013/14.

Celtic
• Beaten 5-0 by Paris in Glasgow in their Group B opener, their biggest home European defeat, Celtic ended a ten-game (D3 L7), four-year winless run in the UEFA Champions League group stage by overcoming Anderlecht. Their previous win was a 2-1 home success against AFC Ajax on 22 October 2013.

• The Anderlecht win was the Hoops' first for 17 European group stage fixtures in the UEFA Champions League or UEFA Europa League (D7 L9).

• In 2016/17 Celtic came fourth in their section, taking three points from six games. They suffered a record 7-0 loss at FC Barcelona but drew 1-1 at both VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach and Manchester City FC.

• The Mönchengladbach draw, their second in succession in Germany, left Celtic with the record W0 D3 L7 away to Bundesliga clubs.

• The Scottish champions are on a seven-game winless run, home and away, against German clubs (D3 L4). Paul Lambert, Shaun Maloney and Stiliyan Petrov scored when Celtic last overcame German opposition – 3-1 at home against VfB Stuttgart in the 2002/03 UEFA Cup fourth round.

• Celtic started this season in the second qualifying round, beating Linfield FC (2-0 away, 4-0 home) and then Rosenborg BK in the third qualifying round (0-0 home, 1-0 away). They posted a fifth straight clean sheet with a 5-0 win against FC Astana in the home first leg of their play-off, advancing despite a 4-3 loss in Kazakhstan which ended a four-game (W2 D2) unbeaten away run in Europe.

• The victory at Linfield broke Celtic's 11-match sequence without an away win in Europe (D6 L5).

• Scottish champions for a sixth consecutive campaign in 2016/17 – when they went through their domestic season unbeaten – Celtic are in the group stage for the tenth time.

• Arturo Vidal helped Juventus beat Celtic away (3-0) and home (2-0) in the 2012/13 UEFA Champions League round of 16.

• Manuel Neuer, Jérôme Boateng and Thomas Müller, who scored both goals, all started for Germany in their 2-1 UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying victory over Scotland on 7 September 2014.

• Neuer, Boateng, Müller and Mats Hummels started Germany's 3-2 defeat of Scotland at Hampden Park in the return fixture a year later, Müller again scoring twice. Scott Brown and James Forrest started for Scotland.

• Jupp Heynckes returned to Bayern for a fourth spell as coach, succeeding Ancelotti, on 6 October. On Saturday, his team won 5-0 against Freiburg in his first game in charge.

• Under caretaker Willy Sagnol, Bayern drew 2-2 at Hertha BSC Berlin on 1 October, squandering a two-goal lead – just as they did in the 2-2 home draw against VfL Wolfsburg nine days earlier.

• Lewandowski – who has 18 goals in 16 appearances for club and country this season – hit a hat-trick in Poland's 6-1 victory over Armenia on 5 October and then scored once in the FIFA World Cup qualification-clinching 4-2 defeat of Montenegro three days later. He now has 51 goals for his country, overtaking Włodzimierz Lubański (48) as Poland's all-time top scorer.

• Lewandowski finished Group E with 16 goals – the most ever in a European qualifying campaign for a World Cup or UEFA European Championship.

• Ribéry suffered a knee injury against Hertha and will be out for the rest of the year – as is Manuel Neuer, who fractured a metatarsal bone in his left foot while training on 18 September.

• Bernat, who has not played this season owing to an ankle injury sustained in July, resumed light training on 6 October.

Celtic
• Celtic are unbeaten in 59 domestic matches – the Hoops' last league defeat coming against Saint Johnstone FC in their penultimate fixture of 2015/16.

• Cristian Gamboa played in Costa Rica's 1-1 home draw against Honduras on 7 October, a result that secured the Ticos' place at the World Cup.

• Rogic appeared in both games as Australia defeated Syria after extra time in an AFC play-off. The Socceroos take on Honduras over two legs next month for a berth in Russia.

• Lustig also faces a play-off with Sweden, who finished second behind France in their European Qualifiers group. Lustig scored in the Blågult's 8-0 home win against Luxembourg and played the entirety of their 2-0 defeat in the Netherlands three days later.

• Leigh Griffiths' fourth goal in his last five internationals gave Scotland the lead against Slovenia on 8 October. However, the 2-2 draw in Ljubljana was not enough for a place in the play-offs.

• Craig Gordon earned his 50th cap in Scotland's 1-0 win against Slovakia on 5 October.
