Ronaldo's record-breaking double gives Madrid win at Bayern

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice in the second half to become the first player to reach 100 goals in UEFA club competition and help Real Madrid overturn a first-half headed goal by Arturo Vidal to win at Bayern München. On a disappointing night for Bayern, Vidal missed a first-half penalty and Javi Martínez was sent off.

Bayern dominated the early possession, winning three corners in the first four minutes, but it was Madrid who were the first to threaten, Karim Benzema heading a Toni Kroos centre against the crossbar. Twenty-five minutes in, Bayern made a set-piece count, Thiago Alcántara delivering a right-wing corner on to the head of Vidal, who thumped a header past Keylor Navas.

A similar move nearly brought Bayern a second goal when Arjen Robben and Philipp Lahm combined to give Vidal another headed opening but this time the ball flew over. The Chilean was at the centre of everything in the first period, and had another golden chance in the final seconds when Dani Carvajal was adjudged to have handled a Franck Ribéry shot. The spot kick was wild, however, lashed high over the bar, and two minutes after the restart the cost of that miss became apparent.

Madrid and Ronaldo had barely figured as an attacking threat in the first half. However, after Carvajal found space down the right, Ronaldo volleyed the ensuing cross past Manuel Neuer for his 99th goal in UEFA club competition. Neuer then did superbly to tip over a Gareth Bale header but the pendulum swung further away from Bayern when Martínez collected two yellow cards in four minutes.

The home goalkeeper brilliantly denied Benzema and Ronaldo, but the second goal Madrid had been threatening arrived with 13 minutes left. Marco Asensio found the space to deliver a left-footed cross that Ronaldo met ahead of Juan Bernat, prodding the ball low past Neuer for his history-making goal – and leaving Madrid in sight of a seventh straight semi-final.

Madrid's star man scored twice in the 4-0 win here in 2014 and once again came up with the goods this evening. Like his team, Ronaldo struggled to make an impact during the first half, but was elusive and deadly in the second, hitting two vital goals both for his team and for him personally.

Penalty miss the turning point
Who knows what might have happened had Vidal converted his penalty shortly before the break? His miss offered Madrid a lifeline and they made sure to take advantage of it within two minutes of the restart. Ronaldo's equaliser gave the holders the upper hand and they went on to seize control of the match.

It was a tale of two halves in Munich. Bayern were in control in the first and deserved to go into the break in front. But just as in the semi-final against Atlético last season, they failed to convert from the penalty spot and Madrid were only too willing to accept the lifeline. The visitors took the initiative in the second period and will take a deserved lead back to Spain.
