▪ Paris look to have settled into an intimidating rhythm since their surprise 2-2 home draw with Ludogorets on matchday six. With January signing Julian Draxler making an instant impact and Edinson Cavani in superb form, they have won ten of their last 11 matches in all competitions, moving second in Ligue 1 as well as advancing to the French League Cup final and last 16 of the Coupe de France.

▪ Though Luis Enrique's men have trimmed Real Madrid's Liga lead from six points to one, the Merengues have two games in hand. Barça have, however, reached a fourth straight Copa del Rey final since their most recent European excursion, seeing off the likes of Athletic Club, Real Sociedad and Atlético Madrid. Saturday's rout of Alavés was soured by a season-ending ankle injury to Aleix Vidal.

Weekend result: Benfica 3-0 Arouca (Mitroglou 25 35, Carrillo 49)
▪ Two points above Sporting atop the Portuguese Liga before the European break, Benfica's lead, now over Porto, is today just a point. The Eagles won eight in a row between 11 December and 10 January, conceding once in the process, but then – across five games – drew with Boavista and lost to Vitória in the league and were knocked out of the Portuguese League Cup semi-finals by Moreirense.

Weekend result: Darmstadt 2-1 Dortmund (Boyd 21, Antonio-Mirko Colak 67; Raphaël Guerreiro 44)
▪ Dortmund were sixth in the Bundesliga in early December, nine points off then leaders Leipzig. Though they are currently up to fourth, 15 points separate them from table-topping Bayern. At the weekend they lost to rock-bottom Darmstadt, three days after scraping into the German Cup quarter-finals by virtue of a penalty shoot-out victory over Hertha Berlin.

Weekend result: Ingolstadt 0-2 Bayern (Vidal 90, Robben 90+1)
▪ Bayern took over the Bundesliga leadership the weekend after matchday six. At that stage they were level on points with Leipzig, but they beat their nearest challengers 3-0 before the Christmas break and now boast a seven-point cushion. They made the last eight of the German Cup with a 1-0 defeat of Wolfsburg.

▪ The Gunners were second in the Premier League, only three points off pacesetters Chelsea, at the start of December; they are presently down to third, ten points short of the summit. They have, however, advanced to the FA Cup fifth round where they face non-league Sutton United. Manager Arsène Wenger finished a four-match touchline ban at the weekend.

Weekend result: Osasuna 1-3 Madrid (Sergio León 33; Ronaldo 24, Isco 62, Lucas Vázquez 90+3)
▪ Madrid stay top of the Liga though their lead over Barça has been cut to one point, with Sevilla three behind; however, Merengues' hopes of a first title since 2012 are boosted by having two games in hand on both. Zinédine Zidane's side also became world champions for a second time in three years, triumphing at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan with an extra-time success over Kashima Antlers. They were since eliminated from the Copa del Rey quarter-finals by Celta Vigo.
NAPOLI

Weekend result: Napoli 2-0 Genoa (Zieliński 50, Giaccherini 68)
▪ Fourth and eight points shy of Serie A leaders Juventus when the group stage ended, Napoli have climbed a spot since – while dropping a further point behind. Thanks in part to 13 goals from Dries Mertens since matchday six, they have now equalled their longest unbeaten streak (18 games), and the Partenopei have also cantered to the Coppa Italia semi-finals, where they will play Juve.
