Germany, Denmark and Portugal forge on

Germany, Denmark and Portugal made it through to the Olympic football tournament quarter-finals, but the trail went cold for European Under-21 champions Sweden.

• Criticised after 0-0 draws in both of their opening games, the hosts cut loose against Denmark, Gabriel Barbosa scoring their first finals goal after 26 minutes, Manchester City's Gabriel Jesus making it 2-0 by the break. Luan and Barbosa again completed the rout, though nothing could prevent Denmark qualifying for the last eight as section runners-up.

Japan 1-0 Sweden
Colombia 2-0 Nigeria

• Under-21 champions Sweden became the first European side to bow out of the finals, undone by Shinya Yajima's goal in Salvador. Goalkeeper Andreas Linde denied Japan a bigger victory, but the three points were of little benefit to Japan, who were also eliminated, as Nigeria and Colombia took the top spots. "In retrospect, we were not good enough to survive this tournament," said Sweden boss Håkan Ericson.

South Korea 1-0 Mexico
Germany 10-0 Fiji

• Germany reached the last eight in style, Freiburg striker Nils Petersen scoring a remarkable five goals as Fiji were overrun in Belo Horizonte. Schalke's Max Meyer also contributed a hat-trick while Arsenal's Serge Gnabry scored twice, making it five goals in three group games for the Arsenal midfielder. Defending champions Mexico, meanwhile, were knocked out by their defeat against South Korea.

Algeria 1-1 Portugal
Argentina 1-1 Honduras

• Portugal had already made sure of progress with a game to spare, and preserved their unbeaten run thanks to a first-half penalty from Gonçalo Paciência. The Porto youngster has also found the net in all three group games, helping Portugal finish first in Group D; Honduras claimed second place by avoiding defeat by Argentina.

The semi-finals take place on Wednesday 17 August, with the medal matches scheduled for Saturday 20 August.
