Portugal progress in Olympics, Germany held again

Germany were held for the second time in two games despite a Serge Gnabry double, while Portugal reached the quarter-finals with a second Group D victory.

Denmark 1-0 South Africa
Brazil 0-0 Iraq

  • Hosts Brazil were held to a second successive goalless draw having also been frustrated by South Africa in their opening fixture, leaving Denmark on top of the section. Silkeborg midfielder Robert Skov scored the Danes' only goal in the 69th minute.

Sweden 0-1 Nigeria
Japan 2-2 Colombia

  • Sweden are still searching for their first win of the Games after Sadiq Umar's first-half winner made Nigeria the first side to reach the quarter-finals. Arsenal's new signing Takuma Asano scored the first goal as Japan came from 2-0 down to rescue a draw against Colombia.

Fiji 1-5 Mexico

  • Arsenal youngster Serge Gnabry struck twice for Germany but the European challengers were held for the second time in two games as Tottenham's Son Heung-Min got on the scoresheet for South Korea. The Asian side lead the section along with Mexico, for whom Erick Gutiérrez plundered four goals in a comeback win against Fiji.

Honduras 1-2 Portugal
Argentina 2-1 Algeria

  • Portugal are through to the last eight after maintaining their perfect record in Rio, Porto forward Gonçalo Paciência hitting the decider as they fought back from behind to down Honduras. Atlético's Ángel Correa was likewise on target, handing Argentina the lead as both teams ended with ten men in their 2-1 defeat of now-eliminated Algeria.
