Madrid supplants Milan as top footballing city

Thanks to Real Madrid's victory against Atlético Madrid at San Siro, the Spanish capital took two European Cup records and an overall UEFA competition best off Milan.

Whatever happened in the UEFA Champions League final at Stadio San Siro, the city of Madrid already knew it would take two European Cup records off Milan.

Up until this season, AC Milan and Internazionale Milano between them had won the competition ten times and reached a total of 16 finals. However, Real's 11th victory combined with Atlético making the decider means Madrid is now ahead of Milan in both respects after their teams met in the final for the second time in three years – the only one-city deciders in the competition's history.

In the UEFA Champions League era solely, Madrid can now celebrate its fifth victory, one more than Milan (whose tally of seven finals the Spanish capital has matched) and Barcelona.

Madrid is also by far the most successful capital in the European Cup, with Amsterdam next on four wins courtesy of Ajax, and Lisbon having had seven final appearances thanks to Benfica. Through the efforts of Arsenal and Chelsea, London has had three UEFA Champions League finalists and, like Amsterdam, one success.

As for performances in all three of UEFA's current and past major club competitions, Madrid was also guaranteed to climb one clear of Milan's total of 15 trophies. Madrid already led Milan in UEFA competition final appearances before this season and are now 26-23 up, though no city can equal London's feat of four different winners and five separate finalist clubs. If Liverpool had won the UEFA Europa League final, the city would have joined Madrid and Milan on double figures.
