Real Madrid strengthened their position as the European Cup's dominant force with their 11th victory in the competition following their penalty shoot-out defeat of neighbours Atlético Madrid in Milan – and have also become the first team to lift the trophy five times in the UEFA Champions League era.
Madrid got the better of Atlético in Lisbon two years ago – the first European Cup final between clubs from the same city – and repeated the trick at San Siro. That gives them their 11th European title, four ahead of AC Milan, with Barcelona, Bayern München and Liverpool all on five triumphs. Atlético, however, have now lost three European Cup finals, behind only Juventus (six), Bayern and Benfica (both five) and level with Barcelona.
Over the 24 UEFA Champions League seasons, Barcelona had pulled level with Madrid on four successes each thanks to their win last season, yet the Merengues have now struck out in front on their own again. Madrid, Barça and Juve have been in five post-1992 deciders, behind just Milan in that category. Atlético are the first club to have been beaten in three finals without having at least one title to their name.
