Cristiano Ronaldo takes scoring prize again

Cristiano Ronaldo has finished as the UEFA Champions League's top marksman for the fourth season running, notching 16 goals – and the Portuguese star is closing in on a century in Europe's premier club competition.

The Real Madrid forward has managed a remarkable 55 UEFA Champions League goals in the last four seasons, and has now been crowned leading scorer in the competition five times, having also achieved the feat with Manchester United in 2007/08. Ronaldo, who also converted the winning penalty in the final shoot-out, ended seven goals clear of Bayern München's Robert Lewandowski, with another Bayern ace Thomas Müller and Barcelona's Luis Suárez joint third on eight strikes apiece.

Ronaldo has also broken clear of Lionel Messi in the all-time UEFA Champions League goalscoring stakes, with 93 to his name compared with the Barcelona man's 83 – both players having begun the campaign on 77 goals. Ronaldo leads Messi 94–83 in the European Cup overall, including qualifying, for the competition's 61 seasons.
