Schürrle and Dante flag up Wolfsburg achievement

André Schürrle promised "two amazing games" in the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after Wolfsburg reached the last eight for the first time.

The FIFA World Cup winner scored the only goal in the knockout stage debutants' round of 16 second-leg triumph against Gent and was excited at the prospect of breaking more new ground as he looked ahead to the draw on 18 March.

"It's going to be difficult no matter who we play," the 25-year-old told UEFA.com. "A lot of the players here have never experienced this stage of the UEFA Champions League so we want to give it our all. It's fantastic for our fans, who've never had anything like this; they will see two amazing games. It's great for the whole club."

The 1-0 win completed a 4-2 aggregate success against the Belgian champions, with Schürrle pleased with a job well done. "The first thing we wanted was to avoid conceding," he said. "The first half was hard as Gent had plenty of the ball and we had to run a lot while trying to regain possession. But we defended well over the 90 minutes and in the second half we created some chances and scored our goal."

Reaching the quarter-finals was a high for Schürrle's team-mate Dante, but it is not his proudest achievement of the campaign to date. "My best memory is the game against Manchester United when we won [3-2] at home to qualify in first place in our group," the Brazil defender said. "After that, I would choose to highlight tonight and our qualification; it's something really special."

Asked who he felt were the UEFA Champions League's top performers at the moment, former Bayern München centre-back Dante said "Barcelona look really strong", adding of compatriot Neymar: "He has made incredible progress and has reached a level very close to that of Lionel Messi. I am very happy for him. He's a great guy and a very good player."

Whether Wolfsburg get Barcelona in the next round remains to be seen. For the moment, Vierinha is glad to enjoy the moment. "We have made history in the Champions League and it's difficult to say who we might like to play as all of the teams in the quarter-finals will be tough," he explained. "We got through the group stage for the first time and we've advanced to the quarter-finals. Now we can dream."
