Atlético reclaim lead, Juventus continue surge

SUNDAY
Chelsea 2-0 Scunthorpe United (Diego Costa 13, Loftus-Cheek 68)
Aiming for a first FA Cup success since 2012, the Blues navigated their way past third-tier Scunthorpe thanks to goals from Diego Costa and Ruben Loftus-Cheek to make the fourth round. Chelsea coach Guus Hiddink is targeting a second triumph in the competition, after leading the club to success in 2009 when also appointed midway through the season.

Celta Vigo 0-2 Atlético Madrid (Griezmann 49, Carrasco 80)
Diego Simeone's side returned to the top in Spain with their third successive Liga win, despite finding the going tough during the first half in Galicia. Antoine Griezmann got the Colchoneros off the mark shortly after the restart after combining well with Luciano Vietto, and the visitors made sure of the points when Yannick Carrasco took possession and surged through the defence before finishing well. The result lifted Atlético back two points clear of Barcelona, who have a game in hand.

Sampdoria 1-2 Juventus (Cassano 64; Pogba 17, Khedira 46)
Resurgent Juventus posted a ninth straight victory in Serie A as they moved up to second in the standings, the champions holding their highest position since the season began. Paul Pogba got the show on the road after chesting down a pass from Leonardo Bonucci and volleying in, and Massimiliano Allegri's troops struck again just after the break when Sami Khedira made the most of a superb Paulo Dybala through ball.

Antonio Cassano halved the deficit midway through the second half, but Juve were not to be denied – and were aided by a late red card for Sampdoria defender Niklas Moisander. The win lifted La Vecchia Signora level on points with Internazionale, and just two behind new Serie A leaders Napoli.

Nacional a-a Benfica
Benfica were unable to respond to a win for Portuguese pacesetters Sporting CP as fog interrupted their fixture in Madeira. The match was stopped in the eighth minute and eventually abandoned, meaning the two sides will have to complete their contest on Monday at 13.00CET. The Eagles lie seven points off the summit, though with one game fewer than Sporting under their belts.

SATURDAY
Barcelona 4-0 Granada (Messi 8 14 58, Neymar 83)
Giving both Arda Turan and Aleix Vidal their club Liga debuts, Barcelona were two up within 14 minutes on their way to a win that took them temporarily top ahead of Atlético's Sunday triumph. Arda set up Messi for the first and the most selected player in the UEFA.com users' Team of the Year 2015 had another soon after following a typical link-up with Neymar and Luis Suárez.

Messi had chances for more before half-time, and the hat-trick came when Arda dummied, Neymar hit the post and the Argentina forward pounced on the rebound. Neymar himself had the final word with a neat chip following a Suárez pass.

Real Madrid 5-0 Deportivo La Coruña (Benzema 15 90+1, Bale 22 49 63)
Zinédine Zidane opened his time as Madrid coach by bringing in Isco and Dani Carvajal with James Rodríguez missing out, and appropriately it was a Frenchman that scored first under the new boss as Karim Benzema back-heeled in Sergio Ramos's shot for his 150th goal for the club and 100th in both the Liga and at the Santiago Bernabéu. Gareth Bale then headed in Carvajal's cross, and before half-time Cristiano Ronaldo nodded on to the crossbar.

Ramos was replaced at half-time with a shoulder injury, but that did not stop Madrid as Bale stroked in Ronaldo's centre from the right and then had his third with a powerful header to home Toni Kroos's corner. James then replaced Isco and Bale was also withdrawn, but Madrid continued to dominate with Ronaldo unfortunate not to get his own first goal under Zidane, though the Portuguese forward did set up Benzema for the fifth. Third-placed Madrid are four points shy of city neighbours Atlético.

Arsenal 3-1 Sunderland (Campbell 25, Ramsey 72, Giroud 76; Lens 17)
Arsène Wenger stretched his perfect record of FA Cup third-round progress with Arsenal to 20 years in a row as the holders moved into the last 32 despite falling behind to their Premier League rivals. Joel Campbell half-volleyed in Theo Walcott's pass to equalise but although Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain hit the post, Arsenal – aiming for a competition record-equalling third straight trophy – had to wait until 18 minutes to go for substitute Aaron Ramsey to be set up by Héctor Bellerín, who soon after also laid on the third for Olivier Giroud.

Norwich 0-3 Manchester City(Agüero 16, Iheanacho 31, De Bruyne 78)
City also saw off Premier League opposition to begin their FA Cup campaign. Sergio Agüero stood out, his solo goal opening the scoring and he then set up teenager Kelechi Iheanacho for the second. If Norwich were relieved when Agüero was replaced on 71 minutes by Gaël Clichy, another substitute Kevin De Bruyne still breached the home defence for the third time from a tight angle.

Roma 1-1 AC Milan (Rüdiger 4; Kucka 50)
On-loan Stuttgart defender Antonio Rüdiger got his first Roma goal when he volleyed in Miralem Pjanić's free-kick and the German international almost had another when his 20th-minute header forced a point-blank save from Gianluigi Donnarumma to turn the ball on to the woodwork.

Juraj Kucka rose to equalise by heading in Keisuke Honda's looping cross to share the points, meaning Roma failed to move level with fourth-placed Juventus. Francesco Totti came off the bench with 20 minutes to go for his first appearance since injury in late September and his 592nd in Serie A, joining Gianluca Pagliuca in joint-third place on the all-time league list.

Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Bastia (Thiago Silva 29, Maxwell 39)
Unbeaten Paris have extended their lead at the Ligue 1 summit to 20 points as they made it seven successive wins in all competitions. Maxwell's stunning volley was the highlight while Javier Pastore made his first appearance since the UEFA Champions League game against Real Madrid on 21 October.  

Energie Cottbus 0-2 Wolfsburg (Draxler 69, Bendtner 73)
Second-half goals spurred the Wolves to victory in their first friendly of the winter break against their third-tier hosts. Dieter Hecking fielded a strong side and the squad flew to Portugal shortly after the final whistle to enjoy a week of warm-weather training.
