There was euphoria among fans on the terraces and players in the catacombs of the PSV Stadion after the home side's 2-1 victory over CSKA Moskva took them into the UEFA Champions League round of 16.
"This is a huge accomplishment," central defender Jeffrey Bruma told UEFA.com. "Before the group started, no one expected that we would go through, because it was a tough group, yet here we are with three points today and in the last 16."
The former Chelsea man emphasised the need for patience in what was a nerve-shredding situation. "When we play at home we will get chances. In the first half we weren't clinical enough but we knew in the second half that chances would come again. So we focused on that and not conceding."
The match in Wolfsburg, see-sawing from start to finish, ultimately had no bearing on PSV's chances of progressing but the players were still aware of what was happening in Germany. "We heard something at half-time, and we knew it was 2-2 between Man United and Wolfsburg [at some point], so we give some extra gas at the end and the two goals flew in," said Bruma. "Then all we had to do was keep them away from our goal. When the referee blew the final whistle I was buzzing."
It was remarkable how often PSV were caught offside, 11 times in total, although it was not an effective enough tactic to prevent Phillip Cocu's men from prevailing. "It's a risk that they take and in the end we managed to find a way through," said Luuk de Jong, who scored the crucial equaliser.
The PSV captain was delighted at how his side had performed during the group phase. "Generally, we played fantastically," he said. "The first half against CSKA in Moscow and Wolfsburg away could have been better, but apart from that we hardly put a foot wrong. We deserve to go through."
CSKA midfielder Alan Dzagoev was rueful of what he saw as a missed opportunity, his side finishing bottom of Group B. "We played OK," he said. "It just seems like we didn't have luck on our side. We conceded some stupid goals. We'll have time to relax now and then work on things during the winter break."
Bruma said there was no particular team he would like to meet, or avoid, in the next round. "It just means a lot for us, for the fans, the team and the whole Dutch nation, to see PSV between all those big names in the last 16," he said. "That's what counts."
