Manchester United disappointed, PSV determined

  • Louis van Gaal acknowledges "disappointment" as Manchester United are held by PSV
  • "We could have scored three goals tonight but we didn't"
  • PSV in third place, a point behind United ahead of matchday six
  • Phillip Cocu: "This was a great team performance; we have to do it again"
  • Final Group B games: PSV v CSKA, Wolfsburg v Manchester United (8 December)

Louis van Gaal, Manchester United manager
The result is disappointing because I have the feeling we could have finished this game several times – in the first half more than the second – but in the second we had the chance of Jesse Lingard especially. In the first half he played a very good game, but we didn't play so well.

In the first half it was average but in the second half, in spite of my changes, it did not improve. Nevertheless, in the second half we gave only one chance away. At the end it's 0-0 but that's disappointing because we have to win in Wolfsburg and that's also a difficult game. But now our away [form] is much better than last year.

[The performance] is dependable on the shape of the evening, the shape of the moment. They are human beings. Also it depends on the opponents, how they play the game and how they defend or attack. You never know. You can guess but you never know.

We are still second, so we are still in the qualifying position. We have to do it in Wolfsburg and that's more difficult. It would [have been] much easier if we'd done it tonight. But we have won already our home match against Wolfsburg so why can't we win in Wolfsburg?

Of course I'm worried [about the lack of goals], but I know also that goals come and go. It is not a consequence of good or bad performances. Today we could have scored at least three; we didn't score but in the next game you can score out of nothing. That's football.

Rooney: Tough finale ahead in Germany

Phillip Cocu, PSV coach
It was very important to get at least one point today with Wolfsburg winning [in the early game]. We knew if we didn't get a point it would be very difficult to qualify. Getting a point means the options are still there. It won't be that easy because all the games in our group have shown the difference between the teams is not so big. You have to fight every game. We did a great job twice in our home games. We have to do it again. I am happy with the result. It was a great team performance. We have to do it again.

It was the game plan to have speed on the right side – Luuk de Jong looking to beat [Daley] Blind in the air and create chances from that side with the pace of [Luciano] Narsingh. Then early in the game he goes off injured. It was a difficult moment but [Gastón] Pereiro did a great job in replacing him.

United want to dominate the game. That is their style and the first 20 minutes they powered forward and created some dangerous situations. We felt as the game went on and they couldn't score, they were not so dominant any more. They couldn't find a solution of beating our defence. We were tactically very good.
