Bayern's ongoing improvement thrills Guardiola

Bayern München coach Josep Guardiola hailed his team as the "best they've been" under him while Arsène Wenger said there was "nothing positive" for Arsenal to take from the game.

Highlights: Bayern 5-1 Arsenal
  • Bayern on course for last 16 after superb win over Arsenal
  • Bavarians' coach Josep Guardiola says his side can still improve
  • Arsenal's Arsène Wenger describes display as "not good enough"

Josep Guardiola, Bayern coach
This was the right reaction. We lost in London but our performance was good. Today was like a final for us. It was a big step and we have nearly qualified. Now we must win our game against Olympiacos to finish top of the group.

We have real quality in the squad but we lost the ball too much in the first half. After the first goal it became easier for us.

We played to our strengths: possession is very important for me. That's my principle, because with the ball you have more chances to create something. It's not about running, it's about playing with the ball. I want 100% possession. That's why we do not concede many goals but score a lot.

This is the best Bayern squad since I've been here. It's our third year together and we know each other much better. We've improved and we are achieving things but it is still November and we haven't won anything yet. As coaches you need time. We are not perfect yet, but we are improving step by step.

Čech: The better team won

Arsène Wenger, Arsenal manager
Firstly we have to give credit to Bayern but we made it easy for them with a poor defensive play. If we play like this we are going nowhere. This game will not remain in my memory as nothing positive happened at all.

We still have the chance to qualify but those chances are at a minimum. If we play like we did here, we will not qualify.

If Bayern play like they did tonight, they will win against Olympiacos. We still have a small chance to qualify for the knockout stage, but now we have to concentrate on the Premier League.

We have to face reality: this is top-level sport and we have to understand that today our performance was not good enough. We live in a world where you have to face reality.
