Group B
Manchester United 0-0aet, 1-3pens Middlesbrough (English League Cup)
The 10,000 Middlesbrough fans in attendance left Old Trafford in a state of euphoria after a famous fourth round triumph over Louis van Gaal's side. Wayne Rooney and Ashley Young had their spot kicks saved and Michael Carrick fired his over the crossbar. United have lost their last four shoot-outs in all competitions.

CSKA Moskva 2-1 Ural Sverdlovsk Oblast (Russian Cup)
Zoran Tošić's late goal sent CSKA into the quarter-finals. The visitors had equalised through Vyacheslav Podberezkin with 12 minutes remaining, cancelling out Kirill Panchenko's opener early in the second half.

Group C
Astana 4-1 Atyrau (Kazakh Premier League)
Astana usurped Kairat Almaty as leaders after this, their fourth consecutive domestic win. Roger Cañas, Abzal Beysebekov, Tanat Nuserbayev and Junior Kabananga were on target for Stanimir Stoilov's side, who are a point clear of Kairat with two games remaining.

Group D
Manchester City 5-1 Crystal Palace (English League Cup)
Kevin De Bruyne added to Wilfried Bony's header as City went in at half-time 2-0 up in their fourth round tie. Teenagers Kelechi Iheanacho and Manuel García – not in the Citizens' UEFA Champions League squad – added the third and fifth goals respectively, sandwiching a Yaya Touré penalty. City will host Hull City in the quarter-finals.

Schalke 0-2 Borussia Mönchengladbach (German Cup)
Lars Stindl and Thorgen Hazard, from the spot, ended UEFA Europa League contenders Schalke's German Cup hopes in the second round. Gladbach have lost just one of their last eight matches.

Sassuolo 1-0 Juventus (Serie A)
Juventus are 12th in Serie A, 11 points off the pace, after their fourth league defeat this term. Former Bayern München trainee Nicola Sansone curled a free-kick past Gianluigi Buffon with 20 minutes on the clock. Giorgio Chiellini was sent off late in the first half for a second bookable offence.

Group E
Villanovense 0-0 Barcelona (Copa del Rey)
Barcelona got their Copa del Rey defence off to an underwhelming start at third-division Villanovense. A much-changed XI – minus Neymar, Luis Suárez, Dani Alves and Ivan Rakitić, and featuring debutants Sergi Samper and Wilfrid Kaptoum – enjoyed 74% of possession but could not establish a lead to take into the second leg of this last-32 tie on 2 December.

Viktoria Köln 0-6 Bayer Leverkusen (German Cup)
A second-half double from Javier Hernández helped Leverkusen to a comprehensive win and a place in the last 16 of the German Cup. The Werkself have scored 14 times in their last three matches.

Miralem Pjanić and other great Roma free-kicks

Roma 3-1 Udinese (Serie A)
Maicon set up the first for Miralem Pjanić and then doubled Roma's advantage after only nine minutes as the Giallorossi returned to the Serie A summit, where they have a two-point lead over Napoli, Fiorentina and Internazionale Milano. Gervinho gave the capital club a three-goal cushion, which was punctured by Cyril Théréau's consolation for the Zebrette.

Group F
Olympiacos 2-2 Platanias (Greek Cup)
Two second-half goals from Hernâni earned Olympiacos, twice behind, a point in their first game of the Greek Cup group stage. The Piraeus outfit – for whom this is a first draw of the season – had won their last seven matches.

Group H
Zenit 5-0 Tosno (Russian Cup)
Axel Witsel and Artem Dzyuba both struck twice as Zenit raced into a 5-0 lead before half-time against their second-tier opponents from nearby Tosno, a town 50km southeast of St Petersburg. Zenit, who also scored five on Saturday, are into the last eight for the first time since 2012/13.
