Every cloud has a silver lining and the enforced delay to the start of this season's Fantasy football game gives me a chance to look at the team I selected in haste for matchday one and see where I can make improvements. I intend to make full use of the unlimited transfers allowed for this second round of group games.

In goal, Atlético's Jan Oblak came up with the goods on matchday one with a clean sheet at Galatasaray, so he retains his place. I've had second thoughts about Lyon's Anthony Lopes though; the injury to Thibaut Courtois means Asmir Begović is likely to be Chelsea's first choice throughout the group stage, and he's 0.5m cheaper than the Lyon No1.

In defence, I'm no longer such a big fan of Manchester City's Bacary Sagna and I'm going to turn back to one of my stalwarts of last season – Bayern München's Juan Bernat. I'm largely happy to have Atlético (José María Giménez) and Chelsea (Kurt Zouma) but I'll need to replace Luke Shaw after his serious injury on matchday one. Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid) is a viable replacement, while Shaw's Manchester United team-mate Marcos Rojo is another option.

My matchday one midfield was Douglas Costa (Bayern), Koke (Atlético), David Silva (Manchester City), Corentin Tolisso (Lyon) and Eran Zahavi (Maccabi Tel-Aviv). I'm going to persist with the Bayern and Maccabi men, but I'm thinking of replacing Koke – who has a hamstring injury – and David Silva, given City's matchday one struggles.

In terms of replacements, I might see if I can stretch to another Bayern player, Mario Götze – a matchday one goalscorer – while I might splash out on Barcelona's Ivan Rakitić or Ángel Di María, who scored for Paris Saint-Germain in the first round of games.

I went for Thomas Müller as my captain in the first round of games and was rewarded with a double at Olympiacos, and it might have been even better for Hardly Athletic had Alexandre Lacazette not missed a late penalty in Lyon's draw at Gent. Meanwhile, Anthony Martial has been on fire since moving to Manchester United at the end of August.

While Martial – a bargain 5.0m – and Müller are shoo-ins, I might look at other options to Lacazette. Álvaro Morata did well for me last season, while Antoine Griezmann has been among the goals for Atlético and, thinking a little more outside the box, CSKA Moskva's Seydou Doumbia has a respectable UEFA Champions League record. Plenty of options then, as I look to make the most of this unexpected chance to overhaul my squad.
