• Their biggest rivals are Austria Wien, with whom they have contested 312 matches. Of Europe's derbies, only Glasgow's Old Firm has been running longer.

• With 32 league titles, 25 of which were won before 1968, Rapid have more championships to their name than any other Austrian club. Their tally of 14 domestic cups has only been bettered by Austria Wien (27).

• Rapid twice lost in the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup/UEFA Cup Winners' Cup – 3-1 to Everton in 1985 and 1-0 against Paris Saint-Germain 11 years later.

• Their run to the 1985 decider included a stunning comeback against Dynamo Dresden in the quarter-finals. Beaten 3-0 away from home in the first leg, Otto Barić's team ran out 5-0 winners in the return, a match that became known as the 'Miracle of Hütteldorf', thanks to goals from Peter Pacult (2), Leopold Lainer, Antonín Panenka and Hans Krankl.

• Other famous names to have pulled on the green and white include Ernst Happel, one of five coaches to have won the European Cup with different sides, who had two stints as a Rapid player. Andreas Herzog, Austria's most-capped international, also had twin spells at the club.

• They were most recently crowned champions in 2008. Under the guidance of Pacult, Rapid finished six points clear of runners-up Salzburg – whom they memorably defeated 7-0 in the closing weeks of the campaign.

• Save for spending the second half of the 2005/06 season at 1860 München, Steffen Hofmann has been a Rapid player since 2002, making close to 400 league appearances. Introverted and reflective off the pitch, the 34-year-old German is a leader on it, always demanding the ball and never shying away from tackles. The captain is expected to guide this new generation of Rapid players, including Philipp Schobesberger and Louis Schaub.

• Rapid Wien's first permanent home was the Pfarrwiese, from 1911 to 1977. The Weststadion then served as their base until 2014 – in 1980 it was renamed in honour of Gerhard Hanappi, the erstwhile Rapid player who designed it. It has since been demolished to make way for a new arena, which will open in summer 2016 and hold 28,000 fans. For the time being, Rapid reside at the Ernst Happel Stadion.

• Rapid have twice featured in the UEFA Champions League group stage, in 1996/97 and 2005/06. However, they have yet to record a victory.
