Urs Fischer has been appointed FC Basel 1893 the day after the departure of Paulo Sousa.
Sousa stepped down on Wednesday evening by mutual consent because of "significant differences between the club and head coach" having led Basel to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 and the Swiss title, their sixth in a row, in his one season in charge.
Fischer, 49, has signed a two-year contract with the option for another season at a club entering the 2015/16 UEFA Champions League in the third qualifying round.
Club president Bernhard Heusler said: "We're certain that Urs Fischer is someone who shares the aims of Basel and doesn't just see the position here as a stepping stone."
Fischer, who leaves FC Thun and previously played for and coached FC Zürich, added: "I'm the sort of coach who wants to play attacking football. I want a creative team. You’ll soon see my stamp on the team."
