GK: Jan Oblak (Club Atlético de Madrid)
The Slovenian international has had to wait for his chance at Atlético but proved his worth when replacing the injured Miguel Ángel Moyà in the round of 16 and excelled again versus Real Madrid CF. Eight saves kept the holders at bay, the pick of them his first intervention as an outstretched right hand denied Gareth Bale with the Welshman clean through.
DF: Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid CF)
Playing in his first UEFA Champions League game since 26 November, the defender was a tower of strength against Atlético. A notable absentee for the Whites' 4-0 Liga defeat by the Rojiblancos in February, Ramos was brave and his perceptive interceptions were key as Madrid made sure there would be no repeat.
DF: Diego Godín (Club Atlético de Madrid)
So nearly the match winner in last season's final, Godín was again a prominent figure in both boxes. He twice went close to giving Atlético the edge in the tie, while seven clearances at the other end helped ensure the Spanish champions go to the Santiago Bernabéu with a clean sheet.
DF: Javier Mascherano (FC Barcelona)
There was a moment when Paris Saint-Germain, trailing 1-0, looked like they could get back into the first leg. Edinson Cavani was bearing down on goal with options to pass; Mascherano's tackle needed to be pinpoint accurate and, typical of his defensive performance throughout, it was. Not content with that, he also claimed an assist for Luis Suárez's second of the night.
DF: Guilherme Siqueira (Club Atlético de Madrid)
A useful outlet down the Atlético left, Siqueira caused problems for Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal with his forward runs, while he might have scored himself, having a shot blocked.
MF: Sergio Busquets (FC Barcelona)
With centre-backs that like to get forward, let alone full-backs, providing the defensive shield at Barcelona is not for the faint-hearted. Busquets certainly is not that, mopping up at the base of midfield and going about his game with maximum efficiency. It was his tackle on Adrien Rabiot that sparked the opening goal for Neymar.
MF: Thiago Alcántara (FC Bayern München)
With Bayern's midfield depleted by injury, a man who has spent plenty of time on the sidelines of late, Thiago, was drafted in for the first time in Europe this season to face FC Porto. The game did not go Bayern's way, but the 24-year-old performed excellently, helping his side get a grip after conceding twice early on and then getting his first UEFA club competition goal.
MF: Arturo Vidal (Juventus)
Things have not always gone Vidal's way this season, notably when he missed a penalty against Olympiacos FC, and alarm bells rang after he shot wide following a sensational Carlos Tévez pass in the first half against AS Monaco FC on Tuesday. But when Juve won a 57th-minute spot kick, Vidal stepped up and converted for a 1-0 victory. His celebrations were proof of just how important the goal was for the Chile midfielder.
FW: Ricardo Quaresma (FC Porto)
Quaresma tucked away a penalty three minutes in against Bayern and soon after added a second which Porto's visitors never fully recovered from. The winger, who might not have started had Cristian Tello been fit, was cool from the spot and ruthless when robbing Dante and stabbing his second past Manuel Neuer.
FW: Luis Suárez (FC Barcelona)
"We couldn't stop him," rued Gregory van der Wiel. Suárez is in the form of his short Barcelona career. Having put the Catalan giants in the driving seat in the last round with two fine first-leg goals at Manchester City FC, he repeated the feat against Paris. His first was all about quick feet and power, his second a sumptuous shot; both featured nutmegs on David Luiz.
FW: Jackson Martínez (FC Porto)
The presence of Porto's top scorer in their starting XI against Bayern was a real pre-game surprise considering his month out with a thigh injury, and Vincent Aboubakar's form as deputy. But it proved a masterstroke as Porto looked inspired by their talismanic forward and he capped his display by securing the 3-1 win, trapping a loose ball and finishing calmly.
