Club Atlético de Madrid take on Real Madrid CF in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final just 11 months after becoming the first teams from the same city to contest the European Cup final in the competition's 59-year history.
• The Merengues' 4-1 win after extra time in Lisbon gave them a record tenth European Cup. They came from behind following Diego Godín's 36th-minute header, Sergio Ramos' equaliser not arriving until three minutes into added time. Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo – a penalty, his 17th goal of the season creating a new record – then scored in extra time to give Carlo Ancelotti his third triumph in the competition as a coach.
• Atlético have won all four of their home matches in this season's competition, while Madrid have prevailed in each of their away games.
Previous meetings
• The lineups at Estádio do Sport Lisboa e Benfica on 24 May 2014 were:
Atlético: Courtois, Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Filipe Luís (Alderweireld 83), Tiago, Raúl García (Sosa 66), Gabi, Koke, Diego Costa (Adrián López 9), Villa.
Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Coentrão (Marcelo 59), Modrić, Khedira (Isco 59), Bale, Di María, Benzema (Morata 79), Ronaldo.
• The teams had met in only one previous European tie, the 1958/59 European Cup semi-final. Madrid won the home first leg 2-1, before Atlético's 1-0 success in the return. That meant a replay in Zaragoza, where Ferenc Puskás struck the decisive blow to take Madrid into a fourth successive final.
• The teams at La Romareda on 13 May 1959 were:
Madrid: Domínguez, Miche, Santamaría, Lesmes, Ruiz, Zárraga, Mateos, Kopa, Di Stéfano, Puskás, Gento.
Atlético: Pazos, Rivilla, Callejo, Mendiondo, Chuzo, Calleja, Miguel, Agustín, Vavá, Peiró, Collar.
• The teams have met six times this season. Atlético won both league games, 2-1 away and 4-0 at home – their biggest victory over their neighbours since 1987 and the first time they had completed a league double over Madrid since 1950/51.
• Atlético were also triumphant in the Copa del Rey second round (2-0 home, 2-2 away) and the Spanish Super Cup (1-1 away, 1-0 home).
• The lineups for the Liga contest at the Estadio Vicente Calderón on 7 February were:
Atlético: Moyà, Juanfran, Miranda, Godín, Siqueira, Arda Turan, Gabi, Tiago, Koke (Saúl Ñíguez 10; Raúl García 71), Mandžukić, Griezmann (Torres 77).
Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Coentrão (Marcelo 59), Khedira (Jesé 46), Kroos, Isco (Illarramendi 68), Bale, Benzema (Hernández 73), Ronaldo.
• The sides have met in 201 league and cup games, with 103 Madrid wins, 50 for Atlético and 48 draws.
Match background
Atlético
• The Rojiblancos are in the quarter-finals of the European Cup for the seventh time and are seeking a fifth semi-final appearance.
• Atlético have won seven and lost five of their 15 European games against Spanish sides, ousting FC Barcelona 2-1 on aggregate in last season's quarter-finals.
• They are chasing a fifth straight home victory in this season's competition having won their three group games in Madrid with a 10-0 aggregate score. They beat Bayer 04 Leverkusen 1-0 at home in the round of 16 to tie 1-1 on aggregate, winning the penalty shootout 3-2.
• Last year's Liga winners have won 21 of their last 23 European matches at the Vicente Calderón. The only defeat was a 2-0 reverse to FC Rubin Kazan in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 in February 2013.
• The Lisbon defeat was Atlético's only reverse in their last nine European games against Spanish sides (W5 D3) since a 2-0 first-leg defeat against Villarreal CF in a 2004 UEFA Intertoto Cup final.
Madrid
• In the quarter-finals for the fifth year running – they have won all previous four and eight of the last nine they have contested – Madrid are trying to become the first team to retain the trophy in the UEFA Champions League era.
• The Blancos' ten-match winning streak came to an end when they went down 4-3 at home to FC Schalke 04 in the round of 16 second leg, Ronaldo scoring his 77th and 78th goals in UEFA club competition to surpass the record of former Madrid striker Raúl González. Madrid went through thanks to their 2-0 win in Germany.
• Madrid have won eight of their last ten away games in the competition, winning all three games in this season's group stage. Their only defeat in this sequence came in last season's quarter-final against Borussia Dortmund when a 3-0 home win was followed by a 2-0 loss in Germany.
• The Merengues have failed to score in only one of the past 28 UEFA Champions League away fixtures since going down 1-0 at Olympique Lyonnais in the 2009/10 round of 16, a tie they lost 2-1 on aggregate. They have suffered only five defeats in their last 28 European away games.
• Ancelotti can become the first coach to win the trophy four times. He also guided Milan to UEFA Champions League glory in 2003 and 2007 and won two European Cups as a player for the same side, in 1989 and 1990.
Coach and player links
• Ancelotti and Simeone crossed paths as players when the former's Milan beat AC Pisa 1-0 in January 1991.
• The pair have met 11 times as coach of their respective Madrid clubs, Simeone winning five of the duels and Ancelotti three with three draws.
• Juanfran came through Real Madrid's academy and made six appearances for the first team in 2003/04 and 2004/05.
• Isco, Asier Illarramendi, Nacho, Daniel Carvajal and Koke were part of Spain's victorious 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Championship squad.

• Ramos has twice been sent off against Atlético; in a 1-1 Liga draw on 1 October 2006 and during Madrid's 3-2 league win in November 2009.
