Arrigo Sacchi's AC Milan arguably reached their magnificent peak in 1989 – on their way to lifting the European Champion Clubs' Cup – with a mesmering 5-0 demolition of Real Madrid CF. "You don't realise it so much at the time you play, you realise it after that," said Ruud Gullit.
Vote for Milan's memorable rout
After a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabéu in their European Cup semi-final first leg, Madrid were brushed aside in the return as the Rossoneri produced a stunning display with five different scorers. They duly went on to land the trophy for the first time in 30 years.
"We always wanted new goals all the time. The Italians were very, very nervous, very intense," said Gullit. "We [Dutch players] gave something to them – they got a little bit more relaxed – and they gave us something, to be a little bit more serious."
