Legendary Moments: Steaua’s historic triumph

"I put myself in the penalty taker's shoes," said Helmut Duckadam, recalling his role in FC Steaua Bucureşti's shoot-out win in the 1986 final – one of our Legendary Moments.

FC Steaua Bucureşti goalkeeper Helmut Duckadam saved all four FC Barcelona penalties he faced as the Romanian side upset the odds in the 1986 European Champion Clubs' Cup final to send the trophy to eastern Europe for the first time.

Vote for Steaua's unlikely triumph

Having held the Spanish club to a goalless draw over 120 minutes in Seville, Steaua missed their first two spot kicks yet still won the shoot-out 2-0, as Duckadam held his nerve while Barcelona lost theirs.

"In fact, I didn't realise at that moment that if I stopped one more, we would become the champions of Europe," he told UEFA.com. "I put myself in [Barça forward] Marcos's shoes. I said to myself, 'This goalkeeper has chosen one side this evening, he will go the same way – so I will try the other side.' My thoughts were the same as his, so I went left and I managed to stop the fourth one."
