• Barcelona got the better of City in last season's UEFA Champions League round of 16, winning 2-0 in Manchester and 2-1 at the Camp Nou. Lionel Messi and Daniel Alves scored in each leg; Vincent Kompany got City's sole reply.
• City have won three of their 11 meetings with Spanish opposition, losing five. Two of those victories came home and away against Villarreal CF in the 2011/12 group stage.
• Barcelona have beaten English clubs in three UEFA Champions League finals: Arsenal FC (2006) and Manchester United FC (2009, 2011).
• Last year's City scalp ended a run of five away games against English sides without a win for the Blaugrana (D2 L3), a sequence that included semi-final eliminations against Manchester United (2008) and Chelsea FC (2012).
• Barcelona have won only seven of their 29 away matches against English teams, losing 14. At home, however, they have been beaten just twice in 28 fixtures, posting 15 victories.
Txiki Beguiristain, City's former Barcelona director of football
It's a real surprise as we didn't expect it again. We have been going through the same draws as last season. The same happened with having to play Bayern München and CSKA Moskva in the group stage. And we faced Barcelona in the last 16 before, and now the same again. We will face up to it, of course, and we're convinced we have improved the team and can qualify from this tie.
They're a difficult opponent because of the experience they have and the quality of their squad, but we have improved as well. And it's not a question of how we feel now, but how we feel when we're facing them. We want to come into that tie at full strength; we need all our creativity and brilliance in attack and our solidity and strength in defence.
Luis Enrique, Barcelona coach
They are a very difficult team, among the toughest two teams in the draw, the team everyone wanted to avoid and a team that are one of the contenders to win the Champions League. We will have to analyse City very closely, but we also have to remember that this tie will take place in February and many things can happen between now and then, teams can change a lot.
When the moment arrives, we will analyse them. We are certain that the tie will be very close because they are one of the contenders for the trophy and they have strengthened their team by signing some interesting players. It will be a very difficult tie, I've no doubt about that.
