• Bayern and Shakhtar have never played a competitive fixture before.
• Bayern's ten previous matches against Ukrainian clubs have all come against FC Dynamo Kyiv, who beat the Munich team 3-0 over two legs to win the 1975 UEFA Super Cup.
• That 1-0 first-leg reverse is Bayern's sole home defeat by opponents from Ukraine; otherwise they have recorded four victories.
• Shakhtar have lost in Germany in the last two seasons, going down 4-0 at Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League group stage and succumbing 3-0 at Borussia Dortmund in the preceding campaign's round of 16 second leg, completing a 5-2 loss.
• The Ukrainian side claimed their first European silverware against German opposition, edging SV Werder Bremen 2-1 after extra time in the last UEFA Cup final, in Istanbul in 2009.
Taras Stepanenko, Shakhtar midfielder
Before the draw I wanted Real but our coach Mircea Lucescu told us to get ready to play Bayern and his instinct was correct. Well, Bayern are the strongest club in Europe today with great players. So far it has been difficult for us against German clubs. Last season we looked good against Dortmund at home but could still only draw before losing away.
Of course it is not only a great honour to play against a team of such quality but also very exciting. Everyone dreams about it. It is a pity I will miss the first leg through suspension but we will do our best to surprise the football world and progress. It would be a great present for the whole country.
Darijo Srna, Shakhtar captain
It is good we were drawn against a top European club. These games are a great opportunity to prove ourselves against a respected, decorated club. There is no point being afraid of Bayern. We respect the club, the players, but we also deserve to be in this company. We have 180 minutes to show our football and achieve a positive result. Theoretically, Bayern are favourites but this does not mean anything. I am sure every Shakhtar player will make every effort to win this match-up.
Olexandr Gladkiy, Shakhtar forward
Darijo Srna has pointed out numerous times that Shakhtar fear no one. It'll be lovely to play one of the best teams in the world. We'll try to prepare as good as we can to approach these games in the best form. Yes, these will be very difficult ties, but it's possible to play against any team. Bayern are great side with excellent players, but I think Shakhtar have proven in Europe in recent years that we are able to compete with any opponent.
Josep Guardiola, Bayern coach
They have talented young players. These are going to be some good matches.
Philipp Lahm, Bayern defender
Shakhtar are dangerous opposition but nevertheless we have to reach the next round. The minimum goal for Bayern München always has to be the quarter-finals.
Manuel Neuer, Bayern goalkeeper
Shakhtar are the great unknown in the round of 16. Preparing for this game will not be easy. But our coaching and analysis team will give us the required info as usual. Personally I have never played against them before. With the national team we have at least played in Lviv, when we beat Portugal 1-0 at EURO 2012. That is a good omen. I am relatively optimistic that we will reach the quarter-finals.
Thomas Müller, Bayern forward
We have absolutely no history with Donetsk so far, but they have done very well in the group stage. We will approach both games with the necessary respect to get through to the next round.
Arjen Robben, Bayern winger
I like it, it makes a change from Arsenal. But we have to be careful, they have some really good Brazilians in their ranks. We will analyse them well and then play a focused game. Then it should work out.
Franck Ribéry, Bayern winger
It could have been worse but we must watch out nevertheless. Donetsk are a strong team. We have to be focused, perfom, and then I am confident.
Sergei Palkin, Shakhtar CEO
I think that of all the opponents we could have drawn, Bayern are, if not the strongest, definitely one of the strongest. But the draw is what it is. We have to play our football and we need to play against the strongest opponents because by playing against the strongest we become stronger ourselves. The aim is to play in the Champions League every season. The president has set the task to win the Champions League, but that's only possible when you participate in this tournament every year. Only then can we grow.
That's why the Bayern tie is very important, as they are one of the strongest sides. I think Bayern today are Bayern at their best, because they're playing some of the strongest football in their history. But that's good because they will show us how many mistakes we must correct to play at that level. We also shouldn't forget that football is football – that is why we are going to fight until the end and do our best to win. We expect very strong support from our fans. I think there will be a lot of excitement around this tie, and with that huge support we hope to win.
