Mission accomplished for Juventus and Atlético

There were two satisfied dressing rooms in Turin on Tuesday as Juventus's Massimiliano Allegri and Club Atlético de Madrid coach Diego Simeone ticked off their "first objectives".

Our objective was to reach the knockout stage and we did just that. Now we look forward [to the next stage], we don't think too much about which team we are going to face, we are just happy with what we did today.

We all know how good Atlético are at the back. They are always very compact, help each other; a very united group. They always play as a team and this is their main strength. However, we did well tonight. We needed this result to qualify and we did exactly what we had to do.

We were very focused, we did the simple things, the right things. This is what I enjoyed most of all. We are very happy because last season we failed to qualify but this time we are through.

After the first three games we were in a difficult position in the group, but we reacted well and arrived at the last game needing only a point to reach the knockout stage. In my opinion that was undeserved: we deserved to qualify with one or two games in hand.

There is no great difference between first and second place [in the group stage]. Sooner or later you must play against big teams, and if you are strong enough you will beat them anyway.

There were two different games tonight: one in the first half and another after the break. In the first half they filled every space on the pitch and created good chances; it was just impossible for us. In the second half we were the more dangerous side while they defended very deep. Now the real Champions League is set to start, and the most important thing is that Juve are there in the knockout stage after failing to do so last season.

Massimiliano Allegri, Juventus coach
This was our first objective for the season – to get through to the last 16, and it wasn't easy. We had three opponents who had won their domestic leagues and despite playing well in all of our games – we were unlucky in Madrid and in Athens – it all still came down to this last game. If we had not gone through it would have been agonising.

We've still got a lot to improve on. There are a few clubs on a different level – Real Madrid, Bayern München, Barcelona and Chelsea – to the rest. We've played a good group stage. Our defeats away from home almost compromised our chances, but the lads lifted themselves and won here against Malmö and managed to get the result tonight.

I went through four years in a row with AC Milan and I didn't want to ruin that record tonight. That would really have annoyed me. We've got this weight off our shoulders now so to speak, and now we can focus on the league and cup. We have shown that we can have a great Champions League campaign

Diego Godín, Atlético defender
We are extremely happy after achieving our first big objective for the season, qualifying for the round of 16 as group winners. It was a very hard game and we are delighted to have played well and kept a clean sheet.

We were very organised, defending very well. We needed to because Juventus were pressing hard. We also had a couple of good opportunities to take the lead in the first half. The game was very intense in the first half while in the second both teams tired and there were fewer opportunities.

Diego Simeone, Atlético coach
Going through is very important and for the second year in a row we will be seeded so I'm very happy. It was a very intense first half with chances at both ends. In the second half we kept things tight and looked out for a counterattack situation which could have seen us win the game.

I'm really happy with the way the lads played. We were up against really strong opponents and they could have beaten us in the reverse match. It was almost as if Juve were playing with a man less, considering the way Mario Mandžukić pressed Andrea Pirlo and didn't allow him to play his game, but I was also delighted with the way Koke played.

Our first aim was to win the Spanish Super Cup, which we did, and then to get to the last 16, which we've also done. At the same time we wanted to be in a good position in the league, which we are too.
