Only two minutes of Göteborg's Group B home game against PSV Eindhoven had elapsed when Nilsson lined up a set piece from 30 metres out. Even when he struck it, there looked to be little danger – at least not until the ball took a fierce right-to-left turn around the PSV wall and left goalkeeper Hans van Breukelen scrambling helplessly back across the face of his goal.
"It was pretty far from goal so I thought to myself that I would hardly score from there, but it would be good to at least hit the target," recalled Nilsson. "I never saw the ball go in, but the crowd started to cheer so I started to cheer too. I thought the keeper had fumbled. It wasn't until after the match, on TV, that I saw the complete swerve."
