After a quiet first period, Roberto was the impenetrable last line of Olympiacos's rearguard action amid Juventus's second-half onslaught. He made several notable stops, the pick coming nine minutes from time when he pushed Álvaro Morata's fierce effort on to the bar.

DF: Giulio Donati (Bayer 04 Leverkusen)
The right-back excelled at both ends as Leverkusen made it two home wins from two against FC Zenit, scoring the opening goal with a well-directed shot and making some crucial clearances to help preserve his team's clean sheet.

DF: David Luiz (Paris Saint-Germain)
The Paris centre-back completed 49 out of 49 passes at APOEL FC but what really caught the eye were two crucial goal line clearances. The Brazilian international twisted acrobatically to nod away Tiago Gomes' header and then blocked after keeper Salvatore Sirigu had lost the ball, enabling Edinson Cavani's late strike to take the points to Paris.

DF: Marek Suchý (FC Basel 1893)
His team may have lost to PFC Ludogorets Razgrad's added-time strike but their centre-back deserved better for his efforts in marshalling a team that played with ten men for more than an hour, his seven clearances so nearly holding the home side at bay.

DF: Marcelo (Real Madrid CF)
While he played his part in ensuring Liverpool were blunted at one end, Marcelo was also able to join Madrid's attack as a virtual left-winger, bamboozling the home defence as the holders stormed to a 3-0 victory at Anfield.

MF: Eden Hazard (Chelsea FC)
A virtuoso display by the playmaker as Chelsea crushed NK Maribor 6-0, Hazard forcing an own goal from Mitja Viler before scoring twice himself in the final 13 minutes, the second an expert finish from Nathan Aké's pass.

MF: Koke (Club Atlético de Madrid)
The midfielder slotted in Atlético's first goal in the 5-0 defeat of Malmö FF, then set up the next three and is now the group stage's leading assist provider on four overall.

MF: Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)
The German international marked his first UEFA Champions League appearance of the season with a spectacular long-range lob for Dortmund's third goal at Galatasaray AŞ, having already set up Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for the opener.

FW: Arjen Robben (FC Bayern München)
The Dutchman opened his UEFA Champions League account for the season with two trademark goals in the first half-hour as Bayern romped to victory at AS Roma, later teeing up Franck Ribéry for the German champions' sixth of the evening.

FW: Luiz Adriano (FC Shakhtar Donetsk)
The Brazilian became the first player to score four goals in the first half of a UEFA Champions League game at FC BATE Borisov, but he and Shakhtar were not finished there. Luiz Adriano went on to match Lionel Messi's five-goal feat in 2012 as his side equalled the record away win in the competition.

FW: Karim Benzema (Real Madrid CF)
The pre-match focus was on Cristiano Ronaldo and Mario Balotelli but Benzema stole the show at Anfield with two goals, making him the third fastest player to total 40 in the history of the competition, quicker indeed than his Portuguese strike partner.
