Club Atlético de Madrid have completed the signing of Mexico forward Raúl Jiménez subject to a medical.

The 23-year-old will become the ninth new face to arrive at the Vicente Calderón in what is a summer of change for the Spanish champions following the captures of Mario Mandžukić, Jesús Gámez, Cristian Ansaldi, Antoine Griezmann, Jan Oblak, Ángel Correa, Miguel Ángel Moyà and Guilherme Siqueira. Jiménez joins from Club América, for whom he scored in a shoot-out victory against Atlético in a friendly a fortnight ago at the Estadio Azteca.

An Olympic gold medallist with Mexico in 2012, Jiménez has been capped 23 times including at the recent FIFA World Cup. He helped América win the 2012/13 Mexican Clausura title.

After losing last season's leading marksman Diego Costa to Chelsea FC, his strike partner David Villa to New York City FC and Adrián López to FC Porto, coach Diego Simeone has had to rebuild his frontline during the transfer window. After securing the services of Croatia forward Mandžukić, sporting director José Luis Caminero says Jiménez "will complete our attacking lineup" and "stands out for his aerial ability".

Caminero added: "He protects the ball perfectly and can hold it up as he waits for team-mates to join the attack – and he has a terrific shot. He will give us an interesting alternative as we seek to achieve our objectives this season."

Atlético are currently preparing to face Real Madrid CF in the Spanish Super Cup on 19 and 22 August. Like the side that beat them in last season's UEFA Champions League final, they begin in the group stage.
