Cameroon striker Eric Choupo-Moting has joined FC Schalke 04 on a free transfer from Bundesliga rivals 1. FSV Mainz 05.
The 25-year-old, who featured in all three of his country's matches at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, has signed a contract running until June 2017. Hamburg-born Choupo-Moting scored half of his 20 league goals for Mainz last season and overall has found the net 27 times in 122 German top-flight appearances.
He started his career with his home-town club, Hamburger SV, and spent the 2009/10 campaign on loan at 1. FC Nürnberg, moving to Mainz in the summer of 2011. "I am extremely delighted that Eric Maxim decided to come to us," Schalke chief of sports Horst Heldt said. "He is versatile, but above all we plan to deploy him in a central role up front."
Schalke enter the 2014/15 UEFA Champions League in the group stage.
