Juventus defender Andrea Barzagli will miss the start of the next UEFA Champions League group stage after being ruled out for three months following surgery.
The 33-year-old has been suffering from a series of Achilles tendon and ankle problems and upon returning from the FIFA World Cup following Italy's elimination, underwent an operation in Finland. Barzagli will travel back to Italy on Wednesday and start a rehabilitation programme after a period of complete rest.
"Under the supervision of Juventus doctor Fabrizio Tencone, the defender was operated on by Prof. Sakari Orava in Turku, Finland," a club statement read. "He is estimated to be out of action for approximately three months."
The former US Città di Palermo player, who joined Juventus in 2011 from VfL Wolfsburg, will sit out the Italian Super Cup and the beginning of the Serie A and UEFA Champions League seasons. Barzagli, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, has lifted three Scudettos and two Italian Super Cups with Juventus.
