Bayern joy moderated by last year's Arsenal scare

Midfielder Toni Kroos insists FC Bayern München's UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie with Arsenal FC is far from over despite the European champions establishing a commanding 2-0 lead in north London. The first-half dismissal of Wojciech Szczęsny allowed Bayern to turn the screw after the break and the outstanding Kroos opened the scoring with a tremendous 54th-minute strike. However, after losing to Arsenal in the return match at the same stage last season – and only progressing on away goals – the 24-year-old refuses to read too much into the first-leg result.

You always hope you're going to score, or you try, but the important thing is that we get a good result as a team. We did that and we are very satisfied. Philipp Lahm is very important – he's our captain and he can play several positions, as he showed again today. He played left-back in the first half and defensive midfield in the second, and he is important wherever he plays.

Obviously you feel it when you've got one player more on the pitch. But on the other hand I think that after the first five minutes, when we weren't quite in the game, we got the upper hand even when Arsenal still had 11 men. But then, of course, you're going to dominate a bit more when you're a player up.

We won 3-1 here last year and then it was much closer in the return leg, so we have been warned. That's why there are two matches: nothing is decided after the first one.

Winning 2-0 away is always an advantage and I think we can be very, very satisfied. But we must still remain very focused for the return leg. I think we would do well just to take each game as it comes. We have an important return match – we will have to concentrate hard in order to get through to the next stage. We can just be happy that we won 2-0 away. Arsenal played very, very well, and I think the most important thing is that we remain completely focused.

I don't think we started well, but then the Champions League is tough. We showed great personality and still managed to win so we're happy. Arsenal were very, very strong. We have to admit they were much better at the start. But that can happen: it's the Champions League, it's a high level, and what's important is that we got back into the game after a difficult moment and played with personality. We didn't hide and that was important. There will be bad games in the future, but the important thing is that we always keep our heads up and play with personality.

Last year we learned that we always have to be awake and focused, so this year we have to concentrate again so that [last year's second-leg result against Arsenal] doesn't happen again.
