Life ban for Vasile Mungiu

Vasile Mungiu, an official at the Anenii Noi Sports School in Moldova, has been suspended for life by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body for his attempt to manipulate the outcome of a UEFA European Women's Under-17 Championship match between Moldova and Latvia.

Prior to the match that was played in Moldova on 4 August 2013, Mungiu approached the coach of the Moldovan women's U17 national team and offered her a bribe to manipulate the result. The coach immediately reported the attempt to the Football Association of Moldova (FMF) and the police. Mungiu was arrested on the day of the game, and later admitted to the attempted match-fixing.

UEFA is following a strict zero-tolerance policy regarding match-fixing and corruption. Serious sanctions (including lifetime bans from football) are imposed in cases where players, officials or referees have been found guilty of breaching these provisions. The regulations also require that players, officials and other members of the football family immediately report if approached in connection with activities aimed at manipulating a game. UEFA therefore welcomes the prompt and exemplary reaction of the Moldovan women's U17 coach.

UEFA is also pleased with the excellent cooperation of the FMF, as well as the National Anti-Corruption Centre of the Republic of Moldova during the investigation process.
