Borussia Dortmund have been dealt a blow with the news that Jakub Błaszczykowski will miss the rest of the season after damaging cruciate knee ligaments on Saturday.
The Poland captain sustained the injury to his right knee just five minutes into Dortmund's 2-2 home draw with FC Augsburg and scans confirmed his worst fears 24 hours later. "I will not roll over that easily," vowed the 28-year-old. "I will do everything to come back even stronger."
"It's terrible news for the team and Kuba of course. In a way, it's a fitting scenario considering how our season has gone so far," bemoaned coach Jürgen Klopp, whose lengthy absentee list already included Neven Subotić (knee), Mats Hummels (ankle) and İlkay Gündoğan (back).
The 2012/13 UEFA Champions League runners-up, who trail FC Bayern München by 14 points in the Bundesliga, travel to FC Zenit for their round of 16 opener on 25 February, with the second leg scheduled for three weeks later.
