Borussia Dortmund have starting planning for next season with the signing of South Korea striker Ji Dong-won on a four-year deal that takes effect from 1 July.

Ji will join the Schwarzgelben in the summer when his contract with Sunderland AFC expires. The English Premier League strugglers yesterday loaned the 22-year-old to Dortmund's Bundesliga rivals FC Augsburg for the rest of the campaign. The former Chunnam Dragons player scored five goals in 17 league appearances for the Bavarian club in the second half of last term.

"Ji Dong-won is someone who can play in a variety of attacking positions," said Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc of a forward capped 27 times by his country. "We're delighted to have been able to sign such a talented player on a free for next season."

Ji was a peripheral figure following his move to Sunderland in June 2011, finding the net twice in 24 top-flight outings, 20 of which were as a substitute. His most famous act in a red and white shirt came on New Year's Day 2012 when he hit the winner against Manchester City FC at the Stadium of Light.

Augsburg are eighth in the Bundesliga at the midway stage of the season, four places and eight points behind Dortmund, who face FC Zenit in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 on 25 February and 19 March.
