AC Milan have parted company with coach Massimiliano Allegri in the wake of Sunday's 4-3 defeat at US Sassuolo Calcio, which left them 11th in Serie A.
The Rossoneri were 2-0 up after 13 minutes at Sassuolo before 19-year-old Domenico Berardi scored four goals in just 32 minutes, condemning Milan to their seventh defeat of the campaign. A club statement read: "AC Milan want to thank Mr Allegri and his staff for their work and wish him future successes in his career. The team will be led by Mauro Tassotti on a temporary basis."
Allegri, 46, joined Milan in 2010 and immediately led the Rossoneri to the Scudetto. Third last season despite a difficult start to the Serie A campaign, the Rossoneri are the only Italian side to have made it to the UEFA Champions League round of 16 this term, where they face Club Atlético de Madrid on 8 February and 11 March.
However with Milan just six points above the relegation zone at the halfway point of the season, the club decided to end Allegri's tenure. Assistant coach Tassotti, the 53-year-old former Italy and Milan defender, will lead the team on an interim basis until a successor is named.
