Olympiacos FC are likely to be without Dimitris Siovas for the rest of the season after the central defender underwent surgery on a broken right ankle.
Siovas, 25, did not miss a minute of his side's UEFA Champions League group stage campaign but faces between three and four months on the sidelines after injuring his ankle in a training match on Saturday. Capped eight times by Greece, Siovas will have his sights set on a return in time for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
W"e are very sad with what happened to Dimitris because apart from his abilities on the pitch, we also like him very much as a person," said coach Míchel. "We will deal with the issue next week and check out if we need to make a signing to cover for his absence. We hope that he will make it in time for the World Cup but we probably won't be able to count on him for the remainder of the season."
Olympiacos take on Manchester United FC in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 with the first leg taking place in Piraeus on 25 February before the return at Old Trafford on 19 March.
