FC Schalke 04 have signed defensive midfielder Jan Kirchhoff on an 18-month loan deal from Bundesliga rivals and fellow UEFA Champions League contenders FC Bayern München.

The 22-year-old, who can also play at centre-back, will return to his parent club on 30 June 2015. Kirchhoff joined Bayern in the summer from 1. FSV Mainz 05 but has found opportunities limited, with his 11 appearances, two of which were in European competition, all being as a substitute.

Schalke's general manager Horst Heldt said: "We are really happy that this transfer was possible because I am convinced that Jan will help us to reach our goals." Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge described the agreement as a "good decision for all three parties".

Bayern play Arsenal FC in the UEFA Champions League round 16 in February and March, while the Royal Blues will face Real Madrid CF.
