Robben proud of Bayern's history boys

Man of the match Arjen Robben said FC Bayern München "can be very proud" after breaking FC Barcelona's record of nine consecutive UEFA Champions League victories following a convincing 3-1 win at PFC CSKA Moskva.

The Dutch international and Mario Götze both scored superbly taken goals, but Robben believes the German champions "can still improve" before adding that the team "are going in the right direction".

The Russian hosts struggled to turn their chances into goals, which Zoran Tošić said was the "difference between the sides". The Army Men will now fight for a UEFA Europa League spot with FC Viktoria Plzeň, and Pontus Wernbloom thinks they have "learned a lot" from playing "the best team in the world".

It was a tough game, of course, but I think we should have scored more than one goal. We had a lot of chances and could have won, but we gave away the goals and against a team like Bayern you cannot make the mistakes we made today. We made two or three errors and they killed the game. We didn't [manage to score early] and that was the story of the night for us since they took all their chances.

They are the best team in the world so of course we learnt a lot playing against them in the two games. I think it is a positive that we can create so many openings against Bayern. They weren't playing to the best of their ability in the second half, but we carved out a lot of opportunities. This is a team that beat Borussia Dortmund 3-0 at the weekend so I think we have to be a little bit proud of our performance.

I think the second half wasn't bad for us and we created some good chances, but unfortunately this is the difference between the teams and in these games you always need to score. In the first half they had one opportunity and they scored – that shows how good they are and we can learn from them. We grow from year to year, so I hope next year we will be more experienced and play a bigger part [in the competition].

I said that third place in this group is not bad. After the match against Manchester City, we knew we needed to finish third and we will do all we can [to achieve that] and play in the UEFA Europa League.

I think we can be very proud, especially as we've taken the record from a team who have been dominating Europe for a few years. I think we can be very proud as there were games like the UEFA Champions League final and the semi-final. But ten wins in a row proves we are a great side.

Mentally we had to be ready tonight, especially after an important game like Saturday's against Borussia Dortmund, which was very important for us. We had to refocus as this was a completely new game for us and [we had to] start all over again. The pitch was very difficult and the weather was freezing cold, but I think we put in a very concentrated performance and we can be happy.

We have a new coach who has made a few little changes. It may sound a little strange but we are still in a process and can continue to improve, but we are moving in the right direction and it's looking good.

It was a really difficult game. On Saturday we played Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga and then we faced a long journey to Moscow where we encountered some difficult conditions. All these factors had an impact on the way we played. The most important thing is that we managed to play to the best of our ability and get three points. I am really pleased we managed to win here and set a record of ten consecutive victories in the Champions League.
