Bayer 04 Leverkusen will have to do without right-back Roberto Hilbert for several weeks after he tore a ligament in his left knee.
The 29-year-old sustained the injury in training on Wednesday and was then taken to hospital, where a scan revealed the extent of the problem. The club may be deprived of his services until 2014.
Former VfB Stuttgart and Germany man Hilbert, who arrived on a free transfer from Beşiktaş JK in the summer, has started one UEFA Champions League fixture for Leverkusen and played six Bundesliga games so far. Leverkusen are second in Group A with seven points from four matches. They host Manchester United FC on matchday five before visiting Real Sociedad de Fútbol.
