FC Bayern München winger Arjen Robben hailed a "great performance" by his team as they underlined that they remain the team to beat in Europe with a 3-1 Group D victory at Manchester City FC on Wednesday night.

Five months after winning the UEFA Champions League final at Wembley, Bayern's performance on their return to England suggested they may have taken another step forward under new coach Pep Guardiola yet from Robben, scorer of their third goal, there was also a warning that they should keep their feet on the ground. Álvaro Negredo admitted: "My goal didn't serve for anything."

Arjen Robben, Bayern forward
We enjoyed playing tonight's game, it was a great team performance by us. To be fair, I expected a little bit more from Manchester City because I think they have a great team but in the end it was an easy game and a great win.

I think overall they gave us a little too much space and we used the space quite well. When you know our team, that is what we're capable of – we can keep the ball well and then we can create some chances as we have a lot of quality in midfield and up front.

At half-time we said we needed another goal and to keep playing our football and that's what we did. They also have a lot of great players, they only need one moment and you could see it in the last 20 minutes, [we were] a little bit lacking concentration and they scored a goal – of course then it was 3-0 and the game was over.

Let's stay with both feet on the ground, we’re still at the start of the season and it's a long road. We can be happy with tonight’s performance but nothing more than that – we shouldn't speak about [another] final or semi-final, let's just get through this group and see what happens.

Jérôme Boateng, Bayern defender
We had a great game today, we looked very strong. It is not easy to win here, 3-1 against a big club, so we can be happy. After last year of course it is difficult but we want to do better, we have a new coach and he gave us a lot of confidence as you could see in the game. The coach has good tactics for us, we’re confident; everybody likes the ball and to play football.

Dante, Bayern defender
It was a very important win because we know Man City are a very strong team and to get a win here means we’re very close to qualifying and hopefully in first place. We’re adapting very well [under Guardiola], he's a great person, a great professional. He speaks good German after a short time, and we're all keen to continue evolving with his philosophy.

Álvaro Negredo, City forward
My goal didn't serve for anything, so I can't be happy about it. It was a bad game for us and we can’t take any positives because there weren't any – they dominated, they had chances, got three goals. It's very hard to play against them. They are a team that likes to have a lot of the ball, they use it well and it's very hard to get it off them – once you get it back, it's hard to have a clear mind because you’ve spent 90 minutes running after the ball.

Fernandinho, City midfielder
Bayern are a very good team, well set up, they have their style of play and we couldn’t stop them today. They won the Champions League last year, they're playing food football, so you could say they're the best team in Europe. At the end of the game we created some good chances and that's something, but we have to keep working and try to win the next game.
