Reus, Lewandowski exalt in Dortmund victory

Marco Reus told UEFA.com he was delighted with Borussia Dortmund's 3-0 UEFA Champions League defeat of Olympique de Marseille but admitted the one-sided scoreline was a harsh reflection of an otherwise "even encounter".

The Germany winger, who scored the second from a free-kick and earned his side a late penalty, felt the opener was decisive, while two-goal Robert Lewandowski spoke of "revenge" for Dortmund's home-and-away defeats at the hands of Les Phocéens two seasons ago. For André Ayew it was "a difficult result to take", with his side still yet to secure a point in Group F.

Obviously we're delighted to have won. That was our objective. We knew it was going to be tough and that was reflected in an even encounter. We just had the better chances. We wanted to keep a clean sheet and wait for them to make a mistake.

When you're on top it's always important to score a goal; we did that and once we were in front we knew that gaps would appear in the second half. Perhaps we could have made more of our chances in the second half, but we're just happy to have won the game.

I didn't really see the second goal. The ball was on target, which is always dangerous, but I assumed the keeper would save it. Thankfully, from our point of view, he didn't.

It was important for us to get three points on the board, especially at home. We know we need to win all our home games to stand a chance of progressing, but we're up and running now.

I really enjoyed it tonight and I think the rest of the team did too. We're very pleased with the three points. We played pretty well because Marseille are a good side and we didn't allow them any major chances. We defended really strongly.

Two years ago they beat us and although we were a different team back then, it was nice to get a bit of revenge. We still need to go to Marseille and we want to get three points there as well. We managed it tonight, but we want to get three points from all our games, even in the Champions League.

It was an almost perfect performance from start to finish tonight. We didn't give our opponents any chances and really got stuck into challenges, so the winning margin was deserved. We knew they had a really good team and that we needed to keep it tight, which we did well. Our pressing was outstanding and up front we're always good for a goal. We never really came under pressure and once we're in full flow it's difficult to stop us.

It's a difficult result to take. We had a good first half, but they scored on the counterattack. It's not like us to concede a goal like that away from home but it's part of the leaning process and it's good for us to experience games like this and learn from them. We have a lot of young players in the team and for some of them it's their first time playing in the Champions League.

I don't think Dortmund were too strong for us. In the first half we had more possession but they scored on the break. We all went forward and they played the ball out really well and finished it off, but the second goal was a free-kick which the goalkeeper didn't see coming and the third one was a penalty.

When you look at the game as a whole, it wasn't like they outplayed us. Of course they're better than us – last year they were in the final of this competition, but we showed that we have the level to play in this competition and with a little more experience we could have got a better result.

It's going to be very difficult now. I saw that Arsenal won at home against Napoli, but we need to take any opportunities that come our way. It's a great competition and when you have the opportunity to play in it you need to give everything, so that's what we’re going to do and hopefully we'll get some good results in the games to come.

It's fair to say Dortmund deserved the victory, but in my opinion the 3-0 scoreline doesn't really reflect the balance of play. There you go. Football can be cruel sometimes, but we'll learn from this and there are positives to take from the match.

They were very strong on the counterattack. Those are the details which can prove decisive, as we saw for their first goal. After going behind it was always going to be tough to take anything from the game. We gave our all but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Hopefully things will turn out differently in the return match.
