FC Schalke 04 will be without Marco Höger and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar for a significant spell after both players underwent knee surgery today.
Midfielder Höger partially tore cruciate ligaments in his right knee during Saturday's 3-2 Bundesliga win at TSV Eintracht Braunschweig. The industrious 24-year-old featured in each of Schalke's opening two UEFA Champions League Group E games and is likely to be sidelined for the rest of the 2013/14 campaign.
Netherlands forward Huntelaar, meanwhile, is expected to be out of action for the remainder of 2013 having damaged ligaments in his right knee. The 30-year-old has not appeared for Schalke since August.
Early pacesetters Schalke host Chelsea FC in Group E on Tuesday night.
