Felipe Melo opened his UEFA Champions League account for Galatasaray AŞ to set them on their way to a 3-1 victory against FC København and then shared the praise with his team-mates.
The win moved Galatasaray above Juventus into second place in Group B. Emmanuel Eboué set up Wesley Sneijder and Didier Drogba to make it three before the break, with the Ivory Coast striker hailing the defender's impact. FCK are bottom of the section, but Olof Mellberg promised it would be different in the 5 November return.
Felipe Melo, Galatasaray midfielder
I scored my first goal in the UEFA Champions League and it made me even happier to do so in such an important game. This is not a victory of Felipe Melo, Drogba or Sneijder. From the goalkeeper to the forwards, everybody did their job in a good way and this excellent win came [as a result]. For example, Burak [Yılmaz] fought extremely well in other areas of the field despite being a striker.
In the first match we played in the Champions League this season, [a 6-1 home loss] against Real Madrid, Galatasaray successfully pressed in the first half an hour. Had we found the goal within this period, everything could have been different. It was an opportunity for us to take an early lead.
Emmanuel Eboué, Galatasaray defender
All the players, including the substitutes, were encouraging me to go forward. I provided two assists in the match, but it's all about team play. I'm happy we won. I congratulate all of my team-mates. We really enjoyed this match and played very well. It was a big advantage that we started the game with a big desire to win. After getting the victory, now we are in contention for a top-two finish.
Didier Drogba, Galatasaray forward
When quality players play like this, we are unstoppable. Everybody knows what Eboué is capable of doing. He is very happy here and enjoying his football at Galatasaray. We got an important three points. We have to beat them again to make sure we continue on our way.
Olof Mellberg, FCK defender
When you play against quality players and make mistakes, they punish you. For this kind of match, we needed to be at the top of our game. Tonight we were far from that – we made a lot of mistakes.
We were expecting Galatasaray to start with hard pressing, maybe for the first five or ten minutes, but they kept going for the entire first half. They felt confident while doing that and they were lifted. We couldn't keep the ball for a long period of time. It was a combination of Galatasaray doing well and us making many mistakes.
When we host them next time it will be a bit different. Galatasaray won't be with their fans. I don't believe the pressure will be that high from them, but we need to be prepared for anything.
Thomas Delaney, FCK midfielder
We met quality. It wasn't how we wanted to be, especially in the first half. We expected to encounter that, but it's hard to prepare for it. In our national league, we don't play in arenas like this. It's a big experience and difficult to get used to it. That's something you have got to learn. The atmosphere was intense, it had an influence on the game. In the second half we did better.
