Chelsea FC's Netherlands midfielder Marco van Ginkel has undergone anterior cruciate ligament surgery and is expected to be out for around six months.

Van Ginkel, 20, a summer signing from Eredivisie side Vitesse, played 75 minutes of Chelsea's UEFA Champions League Group E home defeat by FC Basel 1893 last week before sustaining his injury in an English League Cup victory at Swindon Town FC on Tuesday.

A statement on the Londoners' official website read: "Chelsea can confirm Marco van Ginkel successfully underwent anterior cruciate ligament surgery today. The midfielder is expected to be out for approximately six months."

José Mourinho's team have a capital derby against Tottenham Hotspur FC in the Premier League at the weekend, before returning to UEFA Champions League action at FC Steaua Bucureşti on Tuesday.
